This is an interesting year for Michigan State basketball. Coming off a few nice NCAA Tournament runs featuring players like Carson Cooper and Jaxon Kohler, there will be some new faces in the mix this year, and the team will be led by Jeremy Fears Jr. and Coen Carr, who are suddenly veterans with huge expectations.
On Tuesday, Tom Izzo made an appearance on Inside College Basketball with CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, and the Hall of Fame head coach of the Spartans displayed some bravado and bullishness about his group going into the season. Tom Izzo thinks this team has a chance to be elite.
Thinks Jeremy Fears Jr. has taken another leap since the end of last season on both sides of the ball.
Says Coen Carr is shooting the ball better, handling much better, and has improved defensively and could be a ‘lockdown’ defender.
High on Kaleb Glenn coming off injury.
Says that Cam Ward ‘should be our starting power forward.’ Also said that Ward had an injury to his hand all last season.
Izzo said he’s surprised by the strong play of Ethan Taylor this summer coming off a disappointing senior year.
Called Jasiah Jervis and Carlos Medlock Jr. ‘electrifying’. Compared Jervis to Gary Harris because of his shooting and defense. Said both freshmen are going to play this year.
