Angeli, who hit the portal on April 17, adds a little bit of experience to a quarterback depth chart light on it. LSU transfer Rickie Collins, who appeared in four games with the Tigers and has played 33 career snaps, is the only quarterback on Syracuse’s current roster with game experience. The Orange are seeking a successor to Kyle McCord, the former Ohio State transfer who led the FBS in passing yards and guided Syracuse to a 10-3 record last season.
The arrival of Angeli adds another viable option to Syracuse’s quarterback competition. Although he has made only one career start, he has played in 21 games and made an appearance in the first half of Notre Dame’s College Football Playoff semifinal win over Penn State in January. In his lone series that night, Angeli went 6-for-7 passing for 44 yards and led the Fighting Irish into field goal range late in the second quarter while filling in for the injured Riley Leonard.
Angeli served as the backup to Leonard and Sam Hartman the last two seasons. His lone start came in a win over Oregon State in the 2023 Sun Bowl, where he went 15-for-19 passing for 232 yards and three touchdowns.
He’s done well in his limited action, completing 72.5 percent of his passes with 10 touchdowns and just one interception in 80 career attempts. Angeli, a former four-star recruit, competed this spring with CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey for Notre Dame’s starting job before entering the portal.
