A sweep behind Tony Gonsolin’s 9 K return and 17 hits – Dodgers Digest

After a walk-off was needed to take the opening game of the series, the Dodgers have ran away with the final two games to complete the sweep over the Marlins. Today saw the return of Tony Gonsolin, and with some help from the Marlins, the Dodgers ran away with it late in an 12-7 victory for their fifth win in a row.

======

After a quiet 1st inning for the bats, it was Max Muncy of all people who slugged his first homer of the year for a 1-0 lead in the 2nd.

And breathe.

The mess started in the 3rd, as Michael Conforto drew a walk, Austin Barnes singled, and while Shohei Ohtani grounded out to change places with Barnes at first as Conforto got to third, he then stole second. That setup a Mookie Betts single to drive in a pair of runs to push the lead to 3-0.

A Freddie Freeman single followed to put a pair on again, and with two outs Andy Pages poked a single for another run. 4-0.

The Marlins did fight back a bit after that, for a while at least.

Tony Gonsolin made his return to the mound for the Dodgers today, and he looked as good as ever. Through three innings, he gave up just a single, and he retired the first two batters of the 4th as well. However, a single and a Kyle Stowers homer made it a 4-2 game in the blink of an eye.

Gonsolin resumed his dominance in the 5th, giving up just an infield single. Unfortunately, he then had a bizarre 6th inning, where he gave up a single to start, Michael Conforto dropped a routine flyball but then got the out at second, Gonsolin notched a strikeout, and then a Stowers liner to center caught Andy Pages sorta in-between for a “double” to make it 4-3 all of a sudden before Tony was able to get out of the frame.

The ERA is just average, but he honestly looked surprisingly dominant: 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 9 K, 77 Pitches.

Anyway, so things were exciting at that point, but they unraveled for the Marlins shortly after.

The Dodgers went scoreless in the 4th and 5th, but with two down in the 6th, Barnes reached on an infield single, Ohtani walked, and then a Mookie Betts flyball put Jesus Sanchez in the spin cycle for a “triple” and a pair of runs to make it 6-3.

Freddie Freeman then immediately followed with his fifth dong of the year to make it 8-3 in a flash.

The Dodgers added on in the 7th when Max Muncy “tripled” after Stowers whiffed on a flyball due to the sun and Enrique Hernandez singled. 9-3.

Things got much worse in the 8th, as Ohtani “tripled” on yet another ball Sanchez misread, then he scored on a wild pitch to make it 10.

With one out, Miguel Rojas hit a ball to the wall, but Sanchez was saved from further humiliation by a fan interfering that gave Rojas a double, and Teoscar Hernandez followed with a double of his own to push another run across.

With two down, Muncy walked to put a pair on, and Enrique singled again for run #12.

Mercifully, that was it for the Dodgers.

Now with a comfortable lead, the Dodgers pen took over. First out was Alex Vesia in the 7th, and he cruised through a clean frame with a pair of strikeouts. Anthony Banda was next in the 8th, getting a much-needed 11-pitch frame without trouble to hopefully right his struggles.

New guy Yoendrys Gomez entered for the 9th coming off his three-inning save, and he gave up a homer to continue Stowers’ great offensive day.

Later he gave up a three-run bases-loaded double to make the final score 12-7.

Yikes.

Anyway, five straight!

The Dodgers will get a day off to travel out to Atlanta for a three-game series with the Braves, which will start at 1:15 PM HT/4:15 PM PT/7:15 PM ET on MLB Network, if you like. Yoshinobu Yamamoto will take the mound looking to continue his great start against Grant Holmes.
