The Cincinnati Reds didn’t just bring the whoopin’ stick to Camden Yards on Sunday. They brought all of the whoopin’ sticks on planet Earth. Career days by Austin Wynns and Noelvi Marte played a big part in the win, but everyone got their chance to contribute on a record breaking day as the Reds pummeled the Baltimore Orioles 24-2 to pick up a series win.

Cincinnati’s offense got the scoring started in the 2nd inning when Jake Fraley’s walk was followed up by back-to-back singles by Noelvi Marte and Austin Wynns, giving the Reds a 1-0 lead. Baltimore got a 1-out double by Jordan Westburg and then thought they were going to get a run when Jackson Holliday lined a ball up the middle, but Elly De La Cruz had different plans.

The run avoidance was only temporary, though. The next batter hit a routine grounder to third base that should have ended the inning, but Noelvi Marte’s throw was short and Spencer Steer was unable to scoop it cleanly and that allowed Westburg to score the tying run.

The game didn’t remain tied for long. Elly De La Cruz, fresh off of a super-human defensive play, led off the 3rd inning with a home run to put Cincinnati back in front. That was just the start of the inning, though. The next three hitters reaches safely to load the bases for Jake Fraley and he cashed in two runs with a single to make it 4-1. Later in the inning Charlie Morton tried to pick off Fraley at first and threw the ball away, bringing in Spencer Steer as the Reds tacked on another run. Austin Wynns then followed up with an RBI single to make it 6-1 and end the day for Morton as Baltimore turned to their bullpen.

Cody Poteet took the mound but the Reds didn’t stop hitting. TJ Friedl tripled to the wall to bring in Wynns. Matt McLain then lined a single into center to cap the inning off and make it 8-1. Things didn’t get a lot better for Poteet when he returned to the mound in the 4th. He walked Gavin Lux to start the inning and saw it come back to haunt him when Noelvi Marte doubled to the wall in right-center to make it 9-1. Austin Wynns followed up by lining a single up the middle to bring in Cincinnati’s 10th run of the day.

After a nice start for Brent Suter, the Reds turned the game over to Ian Gibaut in the 4th and he gave up a leadoff double. Then he issued a 1-out walk, but he was able to wiggle out of the jam to avoid giving up any runs.

In the 5th inning the Reds went right back to scoring runs against Cody Poteet. Matt McLain led off with a walk and then scored on a double by Austin Hays. Gavin Lux followed up with an RBI single to extend Cincinnati’s lead to 12-1.

After taking a break for an inning, the Reds offense got back to work in the top of the 7th. A single and a walk led off the inning and then Spencer Steer doubled in a run. Blake Dunn followed up with an RBI single to make it 14-1. Noelvi Marte plated another run with a single, drawing a mound visit after the first five straight hitters reached to begin the inning. Whatever was said on the mound worked because the next two hitters made three outs.

Randy Wynne took over for Cincinnati in the 7th inning. This marked just his second big league game. The 32-year-old’s only other big league action was on June 25th, 2023 for the Reds against Atlanta. He began his day with a hitless inning that included two strikeouts.

Baltimore turned the game over to a position player in the 8th inning and the Reds did what you would expect…. they put up a bunch of runs. Three singles loaded the bases and then Blake Dunn was grazed by a pitch to bring in a run. Noelvi Marte then hit a grand slam that made it 20-1. Austin Wynns then followed up with a single – his 5th hit of the game. Two walks followed, but Jorge Mateo got Santiago Espinal to fly out to the wall in left field.

The Orioles got on the board for the first time since the 2nd inning when Adley Rutschman hit a 1-out solo home run in the bottom of the 8th inning. Cincinnati got the run back in the 9th on Noelvi Marte’s RBI double. But they weren’t finished. Austin Wynns added to it with a 3-run home run – his 6th hit of the day.

Holding a 22-run lead, Randy Wynne headed back to the mound trying to get a 3-inning save for the Reds. He had to work around two hits, but Wynne picked up his first career save in just his second career game as he held on for a 24-2 win.

Key Moment of the Game

The 7-run rally that the team had in the top of the 3rd inning.

Notes Worth Noting

Austin Wynns had six hits on the day. That ties the Reds record. Philip Ervin, Walker Cooper, Ernie Lombardi, and Tony Cuccinello also had a 6-hit game for Cincinnati. Wynns had never had more than three hits in a big league game before today.

Noelvi Marte had a 5-hit day. And he drove in seven runs.

Cincinnati had 25 hits and 11 walks on the day. Oh, and Blake Dunn who didn’t start the game was hit by two pitches. Both times were by a position player.

Reds have 10 total batters who have done this, first time for the team since at least 1901
