The Cincinnati Reds fell behind early, but battled back to take the lead in the 5th inning. They would tack on runs in the final two innings against the Marlins bullpen and held on for a 5-2 win to avoid being swept in Miami.

TJ Friedl kicked off the game with a double and came in to score when the red-hot Gavin Lux lined a 2-out single into right field to give Cincinnati a 1-0 lead. The Reds lead didn’t last long as the Marlins put together a 2-out rally in the bottom of the inning when Eric Wagaman doubled and then scored on a 2-run homer by Matt Mervis.

Two innings later saw Austin Wynns tie the game up on his third home run of the season. Fast forward two more innings and the Reds offense was back at it again. Jake Fraley led off the 5th inning with a walk and then stole second base. He came in to score on a single by Spencer Steer to put Cincinnati up 3-2. The Reds would load the bases later in the inning but couldn’t push any more runs across.

Brady Singer was locked in after that 1st inning hiccup. After his team gave him the lead in the top of the 5th he gave up a 2-out double – the Marlins first hit since the 1st – but was able to pick up an inning-ending strikeout. In the following inning he allowed a leadoff single, but once again escaped the jam and ended the frame with what was his 8th strikeout of the day.

Ian Gibaut took over on the mound for Cincinnati in the bottom of the 7th and fired a shutout inning after working around a single. The Reds offense then went out in the top of the 8th and put a run on the board when Elly De La Cruz singled, stole second, moved to third on a ground out, and then scored on a fielder’s choice play at the plate where he got in just ahead of the tag.

After Tony Santillan tossed a shutout bottom of the 8th, the Reds offense added to their lead. Spencer Steer led off with a walk and then he came around to score as Austin Wynns doubled down the left field line to make it 5-2.

Emilio Pagan took the mound for Cincinnati in the bottom of the 9th looking to seal the deal in the series finale. Pagan teamed up with right fielder Blake Dunn for the inning as the Marlins hit three fly balls to Dunn, who caught them all, to end the game as the Reds salvaged a game and avoided being swept in the 3-game series by Miami.

Key Moment of the Game

Spencer Steer’s RBI single that put the Reds in the lead in the top of the 5th inning.

Notes Worth Noting

Austin Wynns has three home runs this season. He’s one shy of matching his career high that he set in 2018 and tied in 2021 – both seasons coming with the Baltimore Orioles. After his nine hits in the last two games he’s played in, Wynns is hitting .500/.536/.885 on the season.

Elly De La Cruz, Spencer Steer, and Austin Wynns all got on base three times in the game. De La Cruz stole his 10th base of the season, which now has him in a tie for the league lead.

The Cincinnati Reds pitchers didn’t walk a batter in the game and combined for nine strikeouts. Brady Singer had eight of those nine strikeouts as he picked up the win and moved to 4-0 on the season.

Tyler Stephenson played for Louisville this afternoon. In his second game on his rehab stint he went 0-3 with a ground out and two fly outs.
