Baserunning and defensive miscues cost Dodgers yet again as lineup remains quieted – Dodgers Digest

After yesterday’s boring performance in a loss against the Diamondbacks, the Dodgers came back today and decided to make things excruciating and frustrating for fans, wasting early chances with sloppy baserunning and eventually gifting the D-backs runs on defense in a 6-1 loss.

======

Tyler Glasnow has had some ups and downs so far this year, especially with regards to his command, but today was more like what the Dodgers are looking for out of him.

Early on there was some weird concern about bleeding from his hand, though it didn’t appear to be serious.

Wtf.

Glasnow started by retiring the first 10 he faced before hitting a batter. He then retired the next six batters before giving up an infield single for his first hit allowed, thought he got through that inning without trouble.

The 7th was where things sorta unraveled as a culmination of their sloppy game. A lead-off homer to Corbin Carroll put the D-backs up 1-0 just like that.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. followed with a double that bounced in front of Andy Pages, and Blaze Alexander then doubled to the base of the wall in right to put them both in scoring position. After a sac fly to Pages scored a run, his throw couldn’t be fielded by Enrique Hernandez and Glasnow didn’t backup the play, so Alexander scored to make it 3-0.

One of Glasnow’s best starts, marred by some sloppy play and late sequencing: 7 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 6 K, 100 Pitches.

——

The offense … well, it was arguably even more frustrating than that. After getting just one baserunner in each of the first three innings, the 4th started promisingly with a lead-off Freddie Freeman double. However, after a flyout, Freeman was tagged out on a grounder to third where he would’ve been safe at third if he just ran behind the third baseman. Dunno, but that killed the rally.

The 5th was even worse, as after an Enrique Hernandez single, Miguel Rojas showed bunt on the first pitch he saw but pulled it back and rapped a double to put a pair in scoring position. Shohei Ohtani followed by flying a ball to medium-deep left, and Gurriel ended up throwing out Enrique at the plate after he got a bad jump and didn’t slide at home. Mookie Betts also wasn’t behind the plate to give him directions, and basically it was just a complete team failure.

Shohei needs better contact on that, Mookie needs to be behind home in line with Enrique, and Enrique needs to dive to his left. He looks safe but hard to overturn.

Betts then lined a ball that was caught on a diving play to end that inning.

The 6th then started with back-to-back walks to Will Smith and Teoscar Hernandez to start a rally, but an ugly strikeout and a double play killed that off as well.

Even Orel Hershiser … was less than pleased.

“The location has not been good, but it’s been … effective so far in this at-bat.” – As close as Orel Hershiser will come to saying they can’t hit meatballs for shit.

The same old story started in the 7th when Alex Call led off with a single, but back-to-back outs followed. Still, they rallied as Shohei drew a walk to put a pair on, and Mookie Betts blooped a single in to prevent a shutout at 3-1.

That rallied ended there as they weren’t able to come up with a big blow, which has been the story of their close losses since the All-Star break.

——

For the Dodgers pen, it was Edgardo Henriquez up first in the 8th, and he actually got in trouble with two outs after a single and double, but continued his scoreless run on the year with a strikeout.

Kirby Yates then continued his season struggle in the 9th, giving up a single, walk, and three-run homer to make it 6-1.

——

Not that it really mattered, as the Dodgers offense didn’t do anything over the final two frames.

Another rough loss.

The Dodgers will try not to get swept by the Diamondbacks on SNLA tomorrow at 10:10 AM HT/1:10 PM PT/4:10 PM ET. It’ll be Yoshinobu Yamamoto looking to stop the bleeding against Brandon Pfaadt.
