Chris Sale turned in a strong four inning start in a rehab outing with Gwinnett to headline Sunday’s action in the Atlanta Braves system. We also saw big days from Alex Lodise, Cody Miller, and John Gil down in the lower minors.
Gwinnett Stripers 6, Louisville Bats 5
Making a rehab start Chris Sale pitched four solid innings, giving up a run on three hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Sale needed just 56 pitches to get himself through the four innings, as he looks closer and closer to rejoining the Braves rotation. Following him was Zach Thompson, who allowed three runs in an inning of relief. John Brebbia allowed a run in his inning and two thirds, which was all of the runs allowed in this one. An inning and a third from Dylan Dodd and an inning from Wander Suero closed out the pitching side.
Eddys Leonard homered again, going two for five with with his 16th homer of the season. Conner Capel hit his ninth homer and also drew a walk in the win. Cody Milligan also had a two-hit day, while Sandy Leon drew a pair of walks. Jarred Kelenic recorded a triple.
Columbus Clingstones 7, Biloxi Shuckers 3
Jose Suarez started the late game and turned in a quality start, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk in six innings. Suarez struck out three and recorded five swings and misses before giving way to the pen. Rolddy Munoz went the next inning and a third, giving up the last run for Biloxi. Finally Blane Abeyta went the last inning and two thirds to close this one out, picking up his fourth save.
Patrick Clohisy’s hot start in Double-A continued on Sunday as he had two hits, including his second homer since his promotion, and also stole a base. Geraldo Quintero also added a homer, his 10th of the season, batting in two runs with his. Jim Jarvis also had a two-hit day, including a double. David McCabe had a single in the win, while Ethan Workinger drew a pair of walks.
Rome Emperors 7, Bowling Green Hot Rods 4
Cedric De Grandpre started and battled with his command, and couldn’t make it through the second inning. Cedric was credited with three runs on four hits and three walks over an inning and two thirds, striking out two and picking up three whiffs. He ended up with less than half of his pitches thrown for strikes, with 26 strikes in 53 pitches. Rob Griswold followed and allowed just one unearned run over two and a third innings. Then came two scoreless frames apiece by Jacob Gomez and Justin Long, before a scoreless ninth for the save from Isaac Gallegos.
The recent additions to the Rome roster powered the Emperors offense. Colby Jones and Alex Lodise each went three for five, Jones stealing two bags, scoring two runs and batting one in, while Lodise doubled, scored, stole a base, and batted a run in. Logan Braunschweig also had a two-hit day, going two for four with an RBI. Isaiah Drake singled and batted in a run, Cooper McMurray walked and scored, and in his first professional game Tanner Smith doubled, walked, and scored a run in the win.
Augusta GreenJackets 5, Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 4
Jacob Shafer went four and two thirds innings, allowing a pair of runs on four hits and a walk striking out five. Albert Rivas got the final out in the fifth inning, though did walk a pair of hitters first. Undrafted free agent Drew Christo threw a scoreless inning, then a scoreless inning and two thirds came from Logan Forsythe. Finally Kade Woods came on to get the last four outs, and picked up the save despite allowing two runs to score on a walk and a homer.
Offensively the top of the order starred in this one. Eric Hartman led the way, going three for five with a run scored, run batted in, and a stolen base. Cody Miller and John Gil each had two-hit games, with Gil recording a pair of doubled with a walk, steal, run scored, and three runs batted in. Miller was two for four with a walk, steal, and RBI. Owen Carey, Juan Mateo, and Nick Montgomery all recorded singles in the win.
