The Brewers have the day off today before opening a three-game series against the Mets tomorrow evening. In preparation for that, they announced a couple of roster moves today. The first move is that Easton McGee was optioned back down to Triple-A Nashville. This is likely in preparation for Shelby Miller’s activation on Friday.
Miller has been rehabbing with the Brewers since his acquisition at the trade deadline. He made an appearance with Nashville on Tuesday, striking out the side in an inning of work. That was good enough for the Brewers to activate him, though that move will officially happen tomorrow.
McGee has served as an innings eater for the Brewers, covering late innings when a game is out of hand. He was hit hard in his last two games, allowing seven runs in four innings of work. That included giving up five runs on August 1 against the Nationals. McGee has been up and down four times for the Brewers this season (per Brewer Nation). This count is important because MLB rules only allow McGee to be recalled and optioned one more time this season. If McGee is recalled and optioned a sixth time, he would have to pass through waivers to go back down.
The Brewers also announced that Rob Zastryzny will begin a rehab assignment with Nashville. He’s been on the IL since July 1 with a ribs stress reaction. He was originally sent to Nashville for rehab on July 22, but was pulled back when he had a relapse of his injury.
Adam McCalvy also notes that Jeferson Quero was activated from the Triple-A injured list today. He injured his left shoulder in a game on July 23 on a tag play. Quero missed two weeks while recovering and is ready to go today. In 30 games with the Sounds this season, Quero is batting .259/.333/.362 with two home runs and 18 RBI.
