Conforto lands the big blow as Ohtani also homers in support of Wrobo – Dodgers Digest

After a successful homestand, a short six-game road trip started tonight against the Rockies, and it started the same way a lot of others did in terms of the Dodgers falling behind early. Thankfully, they managed to slug their way past that behind Michael Conforto and Shohei Ohtani, delivering an 9-7 victory.

======

The Dodgers opened with Jack Dreyer today in a quasi-pen game, though things didn’t quite work out after a one-out single was cashed in by a two-out double from Michael Toglia to give the Rockies a 1-0 lead in the 1st.

He got some defensive help from Max Muncy (yes, really) to prevent another run from scoring.

Justin Wrobleski took over for him in the 2nd as the bulk guy, pitching around a single and a steal to start. He was the victim of some Coors Field two-out mess in the 3rd, as a single and then a Toglia fliner that fell just out of Michael Conforto’s reach resulted in an RBI double to make it 2-0.

A classic Coors play.

——

On the other end, Rockies starter German Marquez got a clean 1st, then worked around a lead-off single in the 2nd and double in the 3rd, which continued a trend of slow starts. Fortunately, the 4th happened and it was a proper mess.

Things started with Toglia error on a Freddie Freeman grounder and immediately got worse when Will Smith and Max Muncy followed with back-to-back singles to load things up. A high chopper from Teoscar Hernandez exchanged a run for an out, and it was Toglia again at the center of things when he fielded an Andy Pages grounder and choose to go home with it, but Will Smith glided over the tag to tie the game at 2-2.

One could argue Marquez should’ve been out of the inning at that point, but instead Michael Conforto rocketed a three-run homer to right, his fifth of the year to make it 5-2.

Things didn’t get any better, as Toglia made yet another error on a Tommy Edman grounder, and Marquez looked injured.

Marquez stayed in the game, but Mookie Betts later lined a double to left to extend the lead to 6-2. The end of the inning was also the end of the road for Marquez.

Phew.

Anyway, Wrobleski continued on and walked a batter but got a scoreless 4th. He wasn’t so lucky in the 5th when a single and a double led to a sacrifice fly that made it 6-3, though it obviously could’ve been worse. I thought he might’ve been done at that point, but he came back out in the 6th to deliver an eight-pitch inning, as he continued to look effective: 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 7 K, 86 Pitches.

——

Back to the bats, the Dodgers wasted a pair of two-out singles in the 5th, but in the 6th an infield single from Edman was followed by Shohei Ohtani lining an oppo homer for his 27th to make it 8-3.

The bats then couldn’t capitalize in a double in the 7th and went down in order in the 8th.

——

To the other pen.

Taking over for Wrobo in the 7th was Kirby Yates, who gave up a hilarious pair of singles whose combined exit velocities didn’t total to a hard-hit ball.

That cost him, as after a pair of strikeouts in long at-bats, Thairo Estrada grounded another seeing-eyed single to score a run and make it 8-4.

Alex Vesia entered since Yates was at 28 pitches and got a strikeout to end the frame. Anthony Banda took over in the 8th, starting with a pair of outs but then giving up back-to-back doubles to cut the lead to 8-5. Notably, the first of those doubles was a misplay on a bloop single by Andy Pages, so really the run should’ve been unearned.

After a walk brought the tying run to the plate, Tanner Scott entered for a four-out save. He began by giving up a double down the line in left that struck a ball boy to allow both runners to score, and all of a sudden it was 8-7 before Scott got out of it.

Feels like the Dodgers could absolutely find a way to make this a strategy, lol. https://t.co/AZvXVGkOJi

There was some breathing room in the 9th, as a Muncy single was cashed by a Teoscar Hernandez double to make it 9-7.

No matter, as Scott stayed in for the bottom half and despite allowing a bunt single to Freddie, he closed things out with a double play to end it.
