Dustin May turns in one of the best starts in his career to secure the sweep – Dodgers Digest

After an emotional game yesterday, today was very calm thanks to the offense getting an early lead and Dustin May turning in one of the best starts of his career. The 6-2 victory over the White Sox completed the sweep for the Dodgers, and gives them four wins in a row. They’ve now won nine of their last 10 and seven series in a row.

======

Let’s start with the run support, as it again came early for once. In the 1st, Shohei Ohtani drew a lead-off walk and Freddie Freeman doubled to plate him for a 1-0 lead.

The same guy came through in the 3rd as well. Following another Ohtani walk and Mookie Betts reaching on an error, Freddie sprayed the ball down the oppo line for another double to score them both and made it 3-0.

Two outs followed without him moving, but Michael Conforto absolutely turned on a great pitch to smash his seventh dong of the year to push the lead to 5-0.

It could’ve got worse in the 5th, as Freddie seemed to hit another homer into the stands in right, but it was that guy Mike Tauchman again robbing a homer at Dodger Stadium.

In the 7th, it was Mookie of all people who hit one that couldn’t be robbed, getting his 10th homer of the year to extend the lead further to 6-0.

That was it for the bats on the night.

——

The main story was Dustin May, who thankfully didn’t provide much reason for updates, as he was perfect through five innings. He was also at 50 pitches, so if anything magical was gonna happen it was gonna be in a game like this.

The 6th started with a lineout, but then a single quickly followed to quiet any perfect game/no-hitter talk. With two down, another single followed and Teoscar just completely whiffed on stopping it to advance both singles into scoring position. But May buckled down against his first sign of trouble with a strikeout.

He then issued a walk in the 7th, but worked around that. With his pitch count still low, he came out for the 8th, but was greeted with a single and a Brooks Baldwin homer to ruin the shutout run and make it 6-2.

He was pissed at giving that up, but still, what a great outing: 7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 9 K, 86 Pitches.

Tanner Scott then followed to get some work in as he had not pitched in five days, and he had to work some rust off. He hit a batter, walked another, and uncorked a wild pitch, but managed to not allow any further runs while closing the 8th, partially thanks to the debut of Esteury Ruiz.

To close the game, it was Kirby Yates in the 9th, who got a clean frame with two strikeouts to end it.

The Dodgers will now “greet” the beloved Astros for a three-game series to complete the homestand on July 4. It’ll start an hour earlier at 3:10 PM HT/6:10 PM PT/9:10 PM ET with Ben Casparius drawing the start against Lance McCullers Jr.
