Hyeseong Kim has a day of firsts and the top of the lineup continues to roll – Dodgers Digest

After having their winning streak snapped yesterday, the Dodgers moved on to their next road trip location and are looking to start another one. They once again faced Sandy Alcantara and once again jumped on him early and never relented as the quasi-pen game was effective yet again. It was a day of firsts for Hyeseong Kim, and he helped to power a 7-4 victory over the Marlins.

======

Sandy Alcantara got knocked around last time against the Dodgers and things didn’t begin a ton better this time around. A one-out Mookie Betts single in the 1st was followed by a two-out Teoscar Hernandez double that deflected off a glove to make it 1-0 early.

After a quiet 2nd, Ohtani walked and stole second with one out, and then later with two outs it was Freddie Freeman‘s seventh homer of the year to make it 3-0 in a flash.

Following a clean 4th, Hyeseong Kim started the 5th against Alcantara with a single for his MLB first, and then Shohei immediately followed by bombing a ball at 117.9 MPH over the right-field wall for his ninth homer and a 5-0 lead.

Shohei was more excited for Kim in the dugout, though.

That inning was the last one for Alcantara.

Against the pen in the 6th, the Dodgers mounted an unlikely two-out rally. Andy Pages started it by reaching on an infield single, then Michael Conforto broke an 0-for-31 skid with a single to put a pair on, and Hyeseong Kim blooped a single in to push the lead to 6-0.

That zero, of course, was just as important.

——

Serving as The Opener for the Dodgers, Jack Dreyer started things ideally with a seven-pitch frame that included three groundouts, two of which were to Hyeseong Kim for his first two in the majors.

Dreyer’s day ended with another groundout, this time with Mookie Betts showcasing why he grades as one of the best shortstops in the majors this year.

As planned, taking over as the bulk guy was Ben Casparius, and he started a bit erratic after a long layoff with a two-out single, steal, and walk, but eventually navigated around that. There was another two-out walk in the 3rd, but he did get two strikeouts as well, and then he got his first 1-2-3 frame in the 4th.

After giving up just a single in the 5th, Casparius started to look like he was running out of gas, as a one-out double was followed by a single and then another single by Connor Norby to plate a run and knock Casparius out of the game. 6-1.

In relief of him was Alex Vesia, who got a lineout and a strikeout to prevent adding more runs to Casparius’ line.

6-1 game on May 5th, five-run lead in front of like 10 people in Miami (9 Dodger fans), and Anthropomorphic Red Bull Can is still going nuts over a strikeout. Love him.

The Dodgers ended up getting that run back immediately in the 7th, as a Mookie Betts infield single was followed by a Freddie Freeman single that got Betts to third but saw him get thrown out at second. That cost them a run when Chris Taylor doubled down the line in left to make it 7-1.

In their half of the 7th, the Marlins put pressure on Evan Phillips, greeting him with a pair of singles. However, he got a lineout and a pair of groundouts to post a zero in the inning.

Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for Yoendrys Gomez, who struggled yet again. A lead-off single was followed by a one-out single, and then a massive Agustin Ramirez three-run shot made it 7-4.

He did get a grounder after that where Kim made a great glove flip play, but Freddie just dropped it for an error.

Should’ve been on Kim’s highlight reel. pic.twitter.com/3gVraDAtog

— Chad Moriyama (@ChadMoriyama) May 6, 2025

That forced Tanner Scott into the game in the 8th, and he uncorked a wild pitch and walked his first batter of the season but also got two outs to move things along.

With the Dodgers not adding on any insurance it was Kirby Yates in the 9th for the save, and he cruised through a 1-2-3 inning with a pair of strikeouts to end it.

——

Unfortunate news, as Teoscar Hernandez had to exit with a hamstring injury.

Teoscar Hernández left the game with left hamstring tightness.

— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) May 5, 2025

Dave Roberts said Teoscar Hernández felt tightness in his hamstring and adductor while chasing down a line drive in the gap in the third inning

He’s going for an MRI tomorrow. Roberts said it’s “a little concerning.” Dodgers will fly someone to Miami tmrw in case he goes on IL

— Jack Harris (@ByJackHarris) May 6, 2025

Just saw this request, but yeah, Eric Karros had Stephen Nelson straight bewildered, lmao.

He probably knows “I’m fine, thank you, and you” as well, EK. https://t.co/WfNjp7YTwa pic.twitter.com/G96Dub1PLq
