Just enough offense and just enough relief to deliver another series win behind Yoshinobu Yamamoto – Dodgers Digest

Things were certainly not smooth or easy in the series finale against the Rays, but the Dodgers got their second shutout of the series and just enough offense to take the game 3-0 and the series 2-1.

It’s their second series win in a row and completes a winning road trip as well.

In the oppressive heat, there was a pitchers’ duel between Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Joe Boyle, as both went scoreless through five frames.

Boyle faced just a couple threats, as he gave up a walk and double in the 1st but a double play between that helped him navigate around it, and then a one-out single that was advanced to second on an out led to nothing after an intentional walk to Shohei Ohtani paid off. There wasn’t a whole lot going on against him, really.

Yamamoto mostly scattered singles through four innings, but an infield single started the 5th when he didn’t cover first base, and then a bunt attempt back to him was thrown low to first where Freddie dropped it for an error to corner the runners. Fortuntaely, he was able to escape that with a pop-out and strikeout.

That said, it did cost him pitches, and he ended up exiting after a two-out single in the 6th: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K, 88 Pitches.

That zero was thanks to Alex Vesia, who got the final out of the 6th and also got a clean 7th as well.

Fortunately for Yamamoto, he exited with the lead, as the Dodgers immediately rallied against the Rays pen in the 6th. Freddie Freeman led off with a single, and Michael Conforto worked a one-out walk to put a pair on. Andy Pages came up with the big hit to score Freddie and make it 1-0, though that was all they got.

The next inning saw a rally as well after Shohei Ohtani reached on an infield single, stole second, Mookie Betts walked, they double stole to put a pair in scoring position, and Freddie singled to plate … just Ohtani?

Bizarre that only he scored on this play as even the right-fielder seemed to concede the run. Dino Ebel has been aggressive and passive at seemingly the wrong times of late. That cost them when Will Smith immediately grounded into a double play. Either way, 2-0.

After taking a break for an inning, they got insurance in the 9th. A one-out walk by Alex Call, was followed by a deflected Ohtani double to put a pair in scoring position.

Mookie then had a 10-pitch at-bat end with a sac fly to make it 3-0, and the Rays outfielders continued their dominance of the game (they took away like five hits at least) with a robbery of Freddie at the wall to keep it within save range.

Making his Dodger re-debut, Brock Stewart got a scoreless 8th, giving up just a two-out single. Nice and tidy.

Going for the save in the 9th was Blake Treinen, but it was anything but neat. A lead-off walk was followed by a generous zone for a strikeout, and a single followed to corner the runners and bring the tying run to the plate. After a strikeout put him on the verge, he issued a walk after getting ahead 1-2 and ended up loading the bases.

That was enough for Dave Roberts, who summoned Ben Casparius, and he got the final out on a groundball.

Phew.

In bad news, Tommy Edman‘s ankle has been bothering him all year, and he had to exit today.

Tommy Edman left the game with a right ankle sprain.

Well that was the conclusion of the road trip as they’ll now return home and welcome the Cardinals for a three-game series. It’ll start at the usual time of 4:10 PM HT/7:10 PM PT/10:10 PM ET with Tyler Glasnow facing Sonny Gray.
