Los Angeles Angels starter Jack Kochanowicz dominated the Reds starting lineup on Sunday. Cincinnati didn’t do much better against the bullpen and the club was never able to catch up after falling behind 1-0 in the 1st inning during their 4-1 loss on the evening.
The Highlights
It didn’t take very long for the Angels to get on the board. Taylor Ward led off the bottom of the 1st inning with a double and then scored when Logan O’Hoppe followed up with one of his own. Graham Ashcraft settled in from there and only allowed one more hit in his 4.0 innings of 1-run baseball that saw him walk just one batter and strike out five.
The Reds offense wasn’t doing much early on. Jack Kochanowicz threw 4.0 perfect innings before exiting the game. Kenley Jansen then took over and Cincinnati was finally able to get some baserunners when Tyler Stephenson drew a 1-out walk and then moved up to third on a single by Sal Stewart. The Reds couldn’t cash in on that opportunity though as a bunt couldn’t bring the run in and then a grounder ended the inning.
In the bottom of the 5th inning the Reds closer, Alexis Diaz, made his 2025 spring training debut. He allowed a walk and a single, but he got Mike Trout to tap out in front of the plate to end the inning before allowing any runs to come in and score.
Things weren’t as easy for Scott Barlow in the bottom of the 6th as he allowed two runs – the first on a home run by Yoan Moncada and then another run on a sacrifice fly by Scott Kingery. The Angels would add to their lead in the next inning after a walk by Albert Abreu was followed up by two singles to extend the Los Angeles lead to 4-0.
The Reds got on the board in the top of the 9th inning. Noelvi Marte led off with a triple and Rece Hinds followed up with a walk. Austin Wynns then came through with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1. Francisco Urbaez followed with a single to put runners on the corners, but a ground ball double play ended the game.
