Kris Bubic’s start against the Cleveland Guardians did not exactly go well, although it was not a disaster. Bubic worked three innings and gave up two runs in that time, including one home run to the fantastically named Will Wilson. In that time, did not notch any strikeouts.
All told, five Royals pitched in the game, and four of them gave up at least one run. Michael Lorenzen, John Schreiber, and Andrew Hoffman were the other trio who pitched and gave up a run. Lorenzen tossed three innings like Bubic, another piece of evidence he is likely bound for the rotation.
On the hitting side, the Royals hit four doubles (one each from Bobby Witt Jr., Freddy Fermin, Cavan Biggio, and Tyler Tolbert) but only ended up with a pair of runs thanks to 10 strikeouts and only one walk (from Nick Pratto). Perhaps most importantly, Jac Caglianone did not hit a home run in his one plate appearance—rather, he was one of the 10 strikeouts. You can’t win ‘em all, I guess.
Biggio, as well as Witt and Gavin Cross, continue to have strong springs and each have an OPS of about 1.000 or more; all three had a hit today. Drew Waters, Nelson Velazquez, and Salvador Perez continue to lag, as all three have an OPS under .420; none had a hit today.
