A few weeks of Spring Training games are underway, and the first cuts have been made to the White Sox’ Spring Training roster.
This morning, the team announced the following moves:
Optioned LHP Jake Eder and RHP Jairo Iriarte to AAA Charlotte
Optioned RHP Wikelman Gonzalez to AA Birmingham
Optioned LHP Noah Schultz and LHP Hagen Smith to minor league camp
With these moves, 66 players remain in major league camp.
None of these moves are particularly surprising, as it appeared that Jairo Iriarte was the only member of the group that was fighting for a major league roster spot to begin the year. However, it became clear that he still had work to do – in his 4.1 innings, he gave up three runs, struck out three batters, but walked five of them.
None of Eder, Smith, nor Schultz were expected to make the team out of camp. Eder struggled the most of the group, throwing 2.1 innings while giving up three runs, walking three, and striking out four. Both Schultz and Smith got two appearances, each throwing three innings, giving up just one hit and no runs, and walking three batters. Smith struck out four while Schultz only struck out one.
The White Sox will likely continue cuts within the coming days, though we’re unlikely to see decisions on bubble players such as Bryan Ramos or Colson Montgomery until later into the Spring. As the team continues to trim the roster to 26, we will continue to provide updates.
