The White Sox are making some changes at the catching position.
Ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Mets, the team traded Matt Thaiss to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for minor-league outfielder Dru Baker. With the opening, Korey Lee was reinstated from the 10-day IL after completing a rehab assignment with the Charlotte Knights.
Baker, 25, is hitting .245/.344/.302 so far this season with one homer and three RBI over 17 games with Tampa Bay’s Triple-A affiliate. He’s been out of action since April 22, however, with a left adductor strain. The White Sox will look for him to return to his 2024 form, where he was among the Double-A leaders in steals (T5th) and average (8th).
Thaiss, 30, was acquired from the Cubs in exchange for cash considerations this offseason. He has appeared in 35 games so far this year, slashing .212/.382/.294 with one homer and eight driven in. Now with Edgar Quero already in the majors, Lee ready to return from his injury rehab, and Kyle Teel forcing the issue of a promotion, a trade was always the logical outcome to make some space on the roster.
