Anthony Edwards needs to get rid of a ‘needless distraction’ next season, says Ramona Shelburne

Anthony Edwards has already established himself as the leader of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

After leading the Minnesota Timberwolves to back-to-back Western Conference Finals appearances, Anthony Edwards has undoubtedly entered the top-10 territory in the NBA.

While Edwards has grown at a rapid rate, he’s far from perfecting his flaws, at least, that’s what ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne believes.

Anthony Edwards needs to be more disciplined

During the 2024-25 NBA season, Edwards slowly developed his leadership skills. He also massively improved his three-point shooting.

However, Ant’s achievements were often overshadowed by his over-aggression on the hardwood. Shelburne believes it’s a ‘needless distraction’ for his teammates.

“Edwards led the league with 18 technical fouls last season and was fined over $400,000 by the NBA for a variety of behaviors: obscene gestures, explicit language, and failing to leave the court after an ejection,” Shelburne wrote for ESPN.

She added: “Not exactly great for his image and candidacy as the future face of the league and the best American-born star.

“But also not great for his reputation with referees in the league, and sometimes a needless distraction to his team.”

Let’s not forget that Edwards is just 24 years old, and he could improve his on-court behavior as he spends more time in the league.

ESPN ranks Victor Wembanyama over Anthony Edwards

While Edwards has lost his cool on the court, he is still a phenomenal player, as the Timberwolves superstar averaged 27.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game last season.

Moreover, leading the Timberwolves to the conference finals is no small feat in the crowded West.

Despite these achievements, ESPN has ranked Edwards below San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama on their top-10 NBA players list for the upcoming season.

No offense to Wembanyama, but he has yet to prove himself in the postseason. Wemby may have a greater upside than Ant, but as things stand right now, it’s a major disrespect to the T-Wolves star.

For reference, Edwards clinched the sixth spot on the list while Wembanyama was given the No. 5 spot.
