Luka Doncic has already shown immense commitment to bringing his A-game to the table during the 2025-26 NBA season.
He did so by going through an incredible transformation this offseason. Even LA Lakers legend Magic Johnson reacted to it.
While Doncic is in the best shape of his career, the Lakers still have a major task ahead of the new season. Yes, it’s potentially signing Doncic to a massive long-term contract extension.
Ramona Shelburne is certain Mark Walter will go above and beyond to re-sign Luka Doncic
While Doncic has made a huge sacrifice to get into his current shape, the Lakers’ top brass won’t rest easy until they get the 26-year-old’s signature on the dotted line.
Speaking of which, NBA analyst Ramona Shelburne recently shared her views on why the Lakers are certain to re-sign Doncic. Shelburne believes new Lakers owner Mark Walter is key to it.
“Mark Walter, who owns the LA Dodgers, didn’t bat an eyelash giving Shohei Ohtani $700 million. It’s just a lot of money for all of us, but they [Lakers] got it,” Shelburne said via NBA on ESPN.
She added: “If he signs here and commits to the Lakers, they win the summer. That’s it. There are teams out there waiting to see if Luka extends with the Lakers because if he doesn’t, he’s the biggest free agent to hit the market.”
For context, Ohtani signed a massive 10-year, $700 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023. As Shelburne pointed out, Walter happily awarded that deal to Ohtani.
There’s no reason to believe that Walter wouldn’t do the same with Doncic. After all, Luka is expected to be the face of the Lakers for the next decade or so.

How much can LA Lakers offer Luka Doncic?
Doncic will enter Year 4 of his five-year, $215 million contract he previously signed with the Dallas Mavericks.
At most, Doncic has another year left, assuming he opts into his $48.9 million player option for the 2026-27 season.
Of course, if the Mavs hadn’t traded Doncic, he could have signed a contract worth more than $300 million. Unfortunately, that’s no longer the case with the Lakers.
As of now, the Lakers are eligible to offer Doncic a four-year, $229 million extension. While it’s not above $300 million, it’s still a solid deal for the 5x NBA All-Star.
