After a summer-long contract stalemate, the Golden State Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga agreed on a new deal.
Jonathan Kuminga agreed to a two-year, $48.5 million deal to return to the Golden State Warriors.
However, Kuminga’s future with the Warriors is still up in the air as he is trade eligible on January 15, 2026.
Despite the noise, Kuminga remains focused ahead of the start of the 2025-26 NBA season.
Jonathan Kuminga says he won’t ask Steve Kerr about roles, ‘I don’t have a consistent role’
If there’s one thing that is unpredictable with the Warriors, it’s how they will utilize Kuminga.
He hasn’t had a defined role with the team and his playing time has been inconsistent over the years.
Even Kuminga admitted that he doesn’t have a consistent role in Golden State. He told Marc J. Spears of Andscape that he won’t ask head coach Steve Kerr about roles.
“I don’t ask [Kerr] about roles because I know what he is going to tell me.
“I don’t waste my energy.
“I choose not to ask because nobody is going to tell me. It’s whatever. You just have to find ways to do things when you get out there.
“Make plays, defend. I don’t have a consistent role. I just play a role where I make sure I play defense and run the floor.”
Jonathan Kuminga says he’s working on being ‘X-factor’ with the Golden State Warriors
Despite his situation with the Warriors, Kuminga remains optimistic and upbeat.
Kuminga also told Spears that he’s working towards being a big X-factor for the team. The 23-year-old has the skill set where he can be a difference maker.
“I’m working towards being an ‘X-factor.’
“Being that guy on both ends when it comes to defense, when it comes to the old offense. So, I just have to find a way to help so we could win a championship.”
Kuminga’s commitment to playing at a high level is reassuring to Warriors fans.
He showed signs of being a star during the second round of the playoffs, where he did have an increased role. Hopefully that can translate to the start of this season.
