Luka Doncic Opens Up About Emotional Impact Of Trade From Mavs To Lakers

Luka Doncic described his February trade from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers as shocking and disorienting, admitting he struggled with how to respond to leaving his basketball home. The five-time first-team All-NBA star spoke candidly about the emotional impact of the blockbuster deal that sent him to Los Angeles in exchange for Anthony Davis. Doncic had spent his entire NBA career with the Mavericks since being drafted in 2018. Doncic had recently closed on his dream house in the Dallas area and expected to sign a supermax extension with the Mavericks during the offseason.

Doncic revealed the psychological challenges of adjusting to his new reality after the unexpected move. The Slovenian guard had considered Dallas his professional home and maintained strong relationships with fans and teammates.

“I didn’t know how to react, how to act, what to say,” Doncic said in a recent interview. “It was a lot of shock. I felt Dallas was my home. I had many friends there. The fans always supported me.”

The 26-year-old expressed concern about disappointing supporters from both organizations during the transition period. Doncic acknowledged the delicate balance of showing respect to his former team while embracing his new opportunity.

“I didn’t want to upset Dallas fans. And I didn’t want to upset Laker fans,” Doncic explained.

The shock of the trade became even bigger than Doncic.

“Everyone was talking about it,” Doncic said. “Even now, they still talk about it.”

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver recognized the trade as a significant career challenge for Doncic. Silver noted the player’s honest reaction rather than offering diplomatic responses about joining Los Angeles.

“Putting aside the merits of the trade, you could argue that it was a bit of a kick in the ass to Luka,” Silver said. “He didn’t try to sugarcoat this trade.”

The trade marked Doncic’s first major professional setback after a meteoric rise through European basketball and NBA stardom.

“A fresh start,” said Doncic.
