Nike has always shown love to its home of Oregon and the institutions that define it. Last October, the Swoosh teamed up with the University of Oregon on an Air Max 90 celebrating the school’s “Grateful Ducks” football game, a tribute to The Grateful Dead’s long history of legendary performances at Autzen Stadium. Now the tribute has found its way from the gridiron to the hardwood with a special PE version of the Nike Sabrina 3.
Sabrina Ionescu is of course an Oregon alum, which adds yet another layer of meaning to a crossover project that’s already as layered as they come. Psychedelic tie-dye patterns wrap the toe and heel, while the Swoosh features high-pile green fabric a la the band’s iconic teddy bear motif, just like the Air Max 90 and Grateful Dead x Nike SB collab from 2020. Green and yellow Grateful Dead logos appear on the tongue, while marking ducks appear through a transluscent outsole.
This PE emerges just weeks after the passing of Grateful Dead guitarist, vocalist, and founding member Bob Weir, who continued to perform through the band’s 60th anniversary celebration last year. The sneakers are not currently expected to release, but that’s subject to change.
