Victor Wembanyama will enter his third season with the San Antonio Spurs next week.
It’s an important year for the Frenchman because his expectations have risen significantly since he was drafted in 2023.
He also has the added challenge of playing without NBA legends Gregg Popovich and Chris Paul by his side.
Wembanyama has spoken about the impact Popovich and Paul have had on him now that they no longer share the locker room.
Popovich coached the Spurs for almost two decades and is remembered as an all-time great with five NBA championships.
Unfortunately, the 76-year-old suffered multiple health issues last season and ultimately stepped down as head coach.
Wembanyama admitted that Popovich’s departure has affected him, but that he is still “inspiring” in his new role as president of basketball operations.
“Oh, for sure. Of course, it’s always sad and shocking when something like this happens, but he keeps inspiring us,” he said.
Wembanyama will also be without legendary point guard Chris Paul this season after he signed for the Los Angeles Clippers in free agency.
The center thoroughly enjoyed playing with Paul because he was such an impressive leader and playmaker.
“I think it was really precious for me to have him for [last] year,” Wembanyama explained. “[He’s a] great mentor, and it’s a safety [net] to have one of the greatest in the game that you can rely on.”
High expectations for Victor Wembanyama in 2025-26 NBA season
Victor Wembanyama is already recognized as a future superstar and Hall of Famer, but he needs to prove himself this season.
He has already shown signs of greatness, averaging around 22 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists, while also being an elite defender.
However, Wembanyama’s two main priorities should now be staying healthy and winning games for the San Antonio Spurs.
If he can play at least 65 games this season and help the Spurs make the playoffs for the first time since 2019, he will be in contention for the Defensive Player of the Year award and All-NBA teams.
