Kobe Bryant’s status as a favorite son of Los Angeles is everlasting. An increasingly rare one-team pro hooper, we’ve seen countless purple/gold or blue/white colorways drape his signature line for more conventional, sporty odes of Tinseltown. Even by the time the Kobe 6 touched down in 2011, all of that territory was well-trod, so Nike’s creative team was forced to get creative: a mandate that resulted in eventual fan favorites like the Kobe 8 “Venice” or leaning on West Coast mainstay Undefeated as the Protro program kicked off.
Contemporaneously, it led to a stereoscopic overhaul of the usual scaly Kobe 6 arrangement, replete with light blue and red shadowing consistent with actual silver screen treatments. In this updated version, 3D glasses appear on the interior of the tongues with “2026” text, while actual spectacles arrive with each pair. In an ahead-of-its-time touch, the OG colorway included alternating tonal Swooshes that swap between the vibrant accents featured throughout, something that’d go on to become a hallmark of hoops shoes with various mismatched editions through the years.
