Emanuel Navarrete unified the WBO and IBF super featherweight titles on Saturday night, forcing a doctor’s stoppage against Eduardo Nunez at the start of Round 11 at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.
The ringside physician ruled Nunez’s damaged right eye too swollen to continue, prompting referee Benjamin Rodriguez to halt the contest.
Navarrete improved to 40-2-1 (33 KOs). Nunez fell to 29-2 (27 KOs).
Unification Removes The Arguments At 130
There was no debate when it ended. Navarrete took two belts by systematically breaking down a reigning champion until the bout could no longer safely proceed.
At a weight class that has rotated titleholders in recent seasons, unification removes the fragmented claims that have hovered over 130 pounds.
Navarrete now controls two of the four major belts, and that puts the division on his terms. Jazza Dickens of the UK (WBA) and O’Shaquie Foster (WBC) hold the other two.
Accumulated Damage Forced The Stoppage
Nunez pressed forward and invested in body work, but the damage around his right eye steadily worsened as the rounds progressed. By the championship stages, the swelling left the doctor with little room to allow the fight to continue.
“This is sport. It can be difficult to see your opponent hurt, but I need to continue to do the work,” Navarrete said afterward.
A Sharper Performance
Navarrete also addressed the contrast with his previous technical decision against Charly Suarez.
“I got back to the heart and guts of being a Mexican warrior,” he said.
Following the finish, the WBO President posted: “All hail the King of Mexico. Navarrete unifies the WBO and IBF titles and leaves no doubt that he is the best junior lightweight champion in the world. Must-see TV! Belts Matter!”
A rematch with Suarez remains possible, while a move toward WBC ruler Foster would further consolidate the belts. Either route now runs through Navarrete.
