Usyk holds the WBA “Super” heavyweight title along with the WBC and IBF belts and has confirmed a WBC defense against Verhoeven at the Pyramids of Giza on May 23. The WBA has not yet indicated whether its title will be included in that bout, and the sanctioning body has not issued a timetable for a final decision on the matter.
Gassiev’s team said it is waiting for guidance from the sanctioning body regarding Usyk’s title status and the order of future heavyweight defenses.
Al Siesta, an IBA Pro promoter who co-promotes Gassiev, said his fighter wants a clear path to the WBA championship position.
“It does present an interesting situation with the WBA title,” Siesta told Sky Sports. “Murat is a proud WBA champion, and he only wants to fight the best. Whether it is Usyk, Moses Itauma, Joshua — it doesn’t matter to Murat. He is ready for anyone.”
Siesta said the WBA should make a ruling if the belt is not part of Usyk’s May fight.
“If the WBA title is not at stake for Usyk against Verhoeven, then it only makes logical sense to strip him of his title or make him a ‘Champion in Recess,’” Siesta said. “This would allow for Murat to be elevated to ‘Super’ champion.”
Siesta said Gassiev would defend the title quickly if elevated to the primary champion position and insisted the Russian heavyweight wants activity rather than extended waits.
“I can promise Murat will defend his WBA title with pride against the most deserving opponent,” Siesta said.
Usyk defeated Gassiev by unanimous decision in July 2018 to become the undisputed cruiserweight champion. Both fighters later moved to the heavyweight division.
