Gilberto Ramírez says headlining a Cinco de Mayo weekend card on the Las Vegas Strip represents the fulfillment of a lifelong dream as he prepares to take center stage on one of boxing’s most historic dates.
‘Zurdo’ defends his WBA and WBO cruiserweight titles against light-heavyweight star David Benavidez, who moves up to challenge for a third weight title.
For Ramírez, the occasion carries personal and cultural significance. A native of Mazatlán, Mexico, the former world champion believes there are few stages bigger than Cinco de Mayo weekend in Las Vegas, long regarded as boxing’s global capital.
“It’s always a dream for any fighter—especially for a kid from Mazatlán,” Ramírez told World Boxing News. “This is one of the most sacred dates in boxing, and to do it in the boxing capital of the world, Las Vegas, Nevada, is truly an honor.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity and will make sure to take full advantage of it by putting on a show for all the fans.”
Canelo talk remains background noise
As one of Mexico’s most prominent active fighters, Ramírez is routinely linked to potential high-profile matchups, including occasional speculation involving Canelo Alvarez.
Asked whether serious talks have taken place recently, Ramírez downplayed the chatter.
“There’s always talks,” he said. “But how serious are they is another question.”
Ramírez was also asked for his view on what Alvarez should do following his loss to Terence Crawford, though he was quick to emphasize that such decisions rest solely with the fighter involved.
“Canelo should do whatever he wants,” Ramírez said. “He’s a grown man; he can decide for himself.”
Focus remains on titles and weight-class plans
With a major bout against Benavidez ahead, Ramírez made it clear that his attention is firmly fixed on his own ambitions rather than on outside narratives.
While questions have surfaced about whether the Cinco de Mayo weekend clash on May 2 could mark the end of his run at cruiserweight, Ramírez dismissed any suggestion that he is nearing a transition point.
“No,” he said. “I’m coming for all the belts. It’s just a matter of time before they all end up with me.”
