Ryan Garcia will have the chance to become a world champion on February 21, despite an extraordinary run since late 2023.

Garcia is scheduled to challenge WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios in a 12-round title fight at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, with the bout streaming live worldwide on DAZN.

The fight was formally introduced last week at a press conference at the Avalon Hollywood in Los Angeles, where both fighters addressed the stakes surrounding a matchup that carries unusual context for a world title bout.

A title opportunity that defies the usual route

Garcia enters the fight following a turbulent stretch that has included a failed drug test, a suspension, and a return bout that ended in a loss. As a result, he will step into a championship fight without an official win on his record since December 2023.

Despite that backdrop, the opportunity remains straightforward: the WBC welterweight title will be on the line, and the result will stand regardless of how the route there is viewed.

Garcia, who will be making his first appearance in a world title fight at 147 pounds, emphasized preparation rather than circumstance when discussing the matchup.

“I am super prepared for this fight and have been really focused,” Garcia said. “You can do a lot of talking, but at the end of the day, the fight is on February 21, and I’m ready.”

Respect for the champion, urgency for the challenger

Barrios enters the bout as the established champion, having held the WBC welterweight title for more than two years. He secured the belt after navigating past Abel Ramos and later defending it in a 12-round contest against former world champion Manny Pacquiao, albeit both in draws.

Garcia acknowledged the challenge posed by Barrios’ durability and experience at championship distance.

“One thing we do know about Mario Barrios is he’s a very durable fighter,” Garcia said. “He can come back in the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth rounds and keep fighting even if he’s hurt.”

While confident, Garcia framed the fight as one that requires caution rather than aggression alone.

“I actually have to be way more careful fighting him,” Garcia said. “If I’m sleeping, he’ll beat me.”
