Shakur Stevenson talks to Ring Magazine about his desires to take on other top fighters in the sport, including Vasiliy Lomachenko and Gervonta Davis. Stevenson says he respects Lomachenko but doesn’t love the ambiguous situation he’s in while holding onto a world title, while also saying he thinks a fight between Gervonta Davis and himself will be the biggest in the sport.
Stevenson on wanting to fight Vasiliy Lomachenko
“With Lomachenko, my only issue became like a bigger issue for me was the fact that he went and got a belt. He went and grabbed the belt, so when you grab a belt and you hold the title you’re just in the way. You don’t want to fight nobody [holding the belt hostage]…so like what are you doing? That was my issue with it all but respect to him…Hopefully one day we can line it up and if not I hope he retire as a legend.”
On a Gervonta Davis fight
“Honestly, I think anything can happen. I think what Turki is doing for boxing is amazing, he’s making the best fight the best, he’s making the biggest fights possible, the biggest fights available. If that fight can’t happen I think somebody got to be scared, that’s what it comes down to.
“He goes out there and he disses me all the time and speak bad about my name so it’s like if you feel the way that you feel about me, ‘oh, I’m not this, and I didn’t do nothing for the sport of boxing’ as you stated, then fight me.
“Why go fight all these guys that haven’t done nothing for the sport of boxing, haven’t accomplished the things that I’ve accomplished…you’re not fighting me but you’ll fight somebody else. So fight me.
“I think that fight will capture the imagination of the world. I think that’s the biggest fight in the world.”
Stevenson is currently scheduled to take on William Zepeda on July 12 with fans hoping the action-oriented Zepeda will force Stevenson into an eventful fight.
