Tszyu vs. Spencer: A Must-Win Showdown

Tim Tszyu (24-2, 17 KOs) is walking a tightrope here. After suffering two defeats in 2024, this fight with Joey Spencer (19-1, 11 KOs) is absolutely crucial for Tszyu’s career. If he can’t take down Spencer—who’s looked shaky at best since his 2023 loss to Jesus Ramos—Tszyu needs to seriously reassess his future in the sport. Let’s not sugarcoat it: a loss to Spencer would likely spell the end of his time at the top.

Tim Tszyu is confident heading into the fight, stating, “It could start either way, but centre of the ring, it begins. And I’ll be there right in the middle to do what I always do and to meet him there.” Tszyu doesn’t pay attention to media interviews, choosing to focus on what his managers and promoters inform him about. However, he was annoyed when he learned about the issue with the judges, calling it “diva-like.” He says, “For them to come with this mentality, it’s diva-like in my eyes,” highlighting his frustration with the preferential treatment others seem to receive. Tszyu believes that the real measure of a fighter is not in how they fall, but how they rise. “A lot of greats fall, and it’s not about how you fall—it’s about how you get back up. And this is my redemption.”

Joey Spencer’s Thoughts:

Joey Spencer is excited about the opportunity to fight, calling it a “dream come true.” He shares, “This is what I’ve wanted to do my entire life. Thank God for the opportunity to live out my dream, and everybody should chase their dreams.” Spencer is focused on himself, believing, “I feel like I’ve got what it takes to be at this level and to win this fight.” He acknowledges his opponent’s skills but adds that the fight is ultimately about him. “It’s not about him. It’s about me.” Spencer doesn’t take Tszyu’s comments about the judging too seriously, suggesting that Tszyu is just trying to “psych himself up.” He says, “Your team wanted neutral judging. He’s trying to manufacture—he’s trying to psych himself up. Psych yourself up.”

Tszyu and Spencer’s Back-and-Forth:

In the back-and-forth exchange, Tszyu fires back at Spencer, denying any attempt to psych himself up. “Nah, nah, nah, man. It’s not fiction. It’s the truth,” Tszyu says. He tells Spencer that it was not him who complained about neutral judges, pointing out, “Who was complaining? Who was sooking? Who was sooking about going on a plane back home and getting neutral judges? Wasn’t me.” Tszyu remains calm and confident, reiterating, “A lot of greats fall, and it’s not about how you fall—it’s about how you get back up. And this is my redemption. This is how I get back up and you’re part of the story, so thank you for that.”

Tszyu’s been knocked out of his rhythm and hasn’t shown he can adjust mid-fight. Spencer’s not the toughest test he’s ever faced—but that doesn’t make him a walkover, either.
