Vergil Ortiz Jr. is frozen at 24-0 while the super welterweight division carries on without him.
Jaron “Boots” Ennis and Xander Zayas are now set to collide in one of the most lucrative fights of the year, while a bitter fallout with promoter Oscar De La Hoya clouds Ortiz’s own path forward.
Ortiz reignited the debate recently by accusing Zayas of declining a proposed 50-50 neutral-territory fight, posting an email screenshot he claims proves an offer was made.
“I wanted everything my way,” Ortiz wrote. “He publicly declined a 50/50 offer in neutral territory and said it was not a real offer, and never negotiated back. He claims to have wanted the fight and did everything he could to make the fight happen and yet we never heard a peep about it again.”
The renewed exchange comes months after negotiations between the two fighters quietly stalled, leaving one of the most anticipated matchups at 154 unresolved.

However, the dispute with Zayas is only the latest twist in what has become an increasingly complicated stretch for Ortiz.
Earlier this year, plans for a high-profile clash with Jaron “Boots” Ennis collapsed amid a legal battle involving Golden Boy Promotions and Ortiz’s manager Rick Mirigian.
The Ennis talks ended when a federal court order temporarily blocked Ortiz from pursuing the fight while the contractual dispute played out.
The situation deepened when Golden Boy pursued legal action tied to the negotiations. Mirigian later fired back publicly at promoter Oscar De La Hoya over how the events were portrayed, outlining his position.
Despite De La Hoya ultimately securing a legal judgment connected to the dispute, the promoter has made it clear the relationship with Mirigian has broken down.
Ortiz reputation dented
Ortiz has come out of the situation with his reputation dented, certainly in the eyes of some fight fans. Being unable to secure his two top targets only to see them now meet each other in one of the most lucrative bouts of the year must sting the Golden Boy star.
The frustration is compounded by the position he now finds himself in with his own promoter, Oscar De La Hoya. “The Golden Boy” has already vowed never to work with Ortiz’s manager again after the collapse of the Ennis negotiations, even winning a legal judgment in the dispute.
Despite that outcome, De La Hoya has still indicated he plans to freeze Ortiz out for his role in what Golden Boy believes was an attempt to make the Ennis fight without the company’s involvement.
Vergil Ortiz options
With the Ennis and Zayas routes closed, the unbeaten contender now finds himself staring at a much narrower road at 154 pounds.
In practical terms, that leaves two obvious championship paths if Ortiz wants to force his way back into the title picture.
Sebastian Fundora holds the WBC title and remains one of the division’s biggest names, while Josh Kelly currently holds the IBF belt.
Either matchup would offer Ortiz a direct route to the top of the division if the damage with De La Hoya can be repaired.
After two major negotiations have collapsed in quick succession, the bigger challenge for Ortiz may now be rebuilding his momentum — both inside the ring and across the negotiating table.
