Barcelona Offer Robert Lewandowski a Surprise Contract Extension — And It Could Change Everything This Summer

FC Barcelona have tabled an unexpected one-year extension offer to the Polish striker, whose future at Camp Nou looked all but over. The decision now rests with Lewandowski — and it will shape the club’s entire summer transfer strategy.

Lewandowski’s Future at Barcà: Still Very Much an Open Question

For weeks, the assumption around Camp Nou has been straightforward — Robert Lewandowski’s time at FC Barcelona was winding down. Out of contract this summer, the Polish striker had been widely expected to move on, with Serie A giants Juventus and AC Milan both circling, alongside interest from MLS clubs Chicago Fire and several Saudi Pro League outfits. The exit door seemed not just open, but practically welcoming him through.

But football has a habit of rewriting its own scripts. And this time, it’s Barcelona doing the rewriting.

Barcà’s Unexpected Contract Offer: Lower Wage, Higher Stakes

According to Sport, Barcelona’s sporting directorate is now preparing a one-year contract extension offer for Lewandowski — a move few saw coming given the club’s very public pursuit of a marquee striker this summer. The proposed deal would come with a reduced base salary, partially offset by performance-related bonuses.

It’s a carefully constructed offer. Barcelona are not simply handing Lewandowski a blank cheque. They’re offering continuity with accountability built in — the kind of structure that reflects both the club’s financial constraints under La Liga’s salary cap regulations and their genuine desire to retain a player who, at 37, is still delivering at an elite level.

This season alone, despite being managed more carefully in terms of minutes, Lewandowski has registered 16 goals and 3 assists across 37 appearances. Numbers that many strikers half his age would envy.

Hansi Flick Holds the Key to Lewandowski’s Decision

Perhaps the most intriguing element of this entire story is not the contract itself — it’s the conversation that hasn’t happened yet. Lewandowski has made it clear that before making any decision, he wants a direct, honest meeting with head coach Hansi Flick to understand exactly what role he would play should he stay.

That conversation carries enormous weight. The striker isn’t interested in being a passenger. He wants clarity on whether he remains a genuine option at the top of the pitch, or whether he’d simply be asked to serve as cover for an incoming number nine.

The relationship between the two men is far from cold. Flick’s agent, Pini Zahavi, also represents Lewandowski — a shared connection that keeps communication lines open and adds a layer of trust that could ultimately tip the balance toward a renewal.

The Julián Álvarez Factor and the Domino Effect on Barcà’s Attack

Here is where the story gets genuinely complicated. Lewandowski has reportedly signalled openness to accepting a reduced salary and a secondary role — but only on one condition: that the club signs a high-profile striker to lead the line. And right now, that name is Julián Álvarez.

The Argentine World Cup winner has been the most talked-about attacking target in Catalonia for months. Julián Álvarez’s career achievements speak for themselves —  he represents exactly the kind of marquee signing Barcelona are targeting.

Should Barcelona secure that deal, Lewandowski appears willing to reprise a secondary role — a high-quality backup who can step up when needed. But that scenario creates an immediate problem elsewhere in the squad.

With three forward profiles overlapping — Lewandowski, Álvarez, and Ferran Torres — Barcelona’s hierarchy privately acknowledge that managing three similar attackers under one roof is logistically and financially unsustainable. Torres, who has had a complicated spell at the club, could find himself the one to make way.

A Summer Window Full of Moving Parts

The Lewandowski situation is just one piece of a much larger puzzle at Camp Nou this summer. Barcelona are simultaneously tracking multiple targets across several positions, and the knock-on effects of each decision are hard to predict. A Decision Expected Before the End of April

Barcelona are not sitting idle on this. The club wants Lewandowski’s answer before the end of April — or at the very latest, the start of May. The logic is straightforward: knowing whether the Pole stays or leaves will fundamentally shape how aggressively they pursue the rest of their summer transfer business. Lewandowski has asked for time to reflect. That’s fair enough given the magnitude of the decision — at 37, this could well be one of his last major contract choices in European football. His agent Zahavi has been in constant contact with the Barcà hierarchy, and by all accounts, both parties are handling the situation with composure rather than confrontation.

What’s clear is this: Robert Lewandowski is not merely deciding his own future. He is, whether he intends to or not, shaping the entire direction of FC Barcelona’s summer transfer window.
