Brian Barry-Murphy describes Cardiff’s 1-0 defeat to Burton ‘sickening’ with Bluebirds fans left embarrassed by it.

Cardiff suffered consecutive home losses as Burton secured their first away win of the season with a late goal from Charlie Webster in the 82nd minute to move off the bottom of the League One.

Despite Cardiff dominating with 20 shots and 77% possession, they failed to convert chances, with Burton’s goalkeeper Brad Collins making key saves.

There was also a controversial disallowed goal by Yousef Salech which added to Cardiff’s frustrations.

The result sees Cardiff missing out on the chance to go top of League One, sitting 4th with 20 points from 10 games played, three points behind leaders Bradford City.

Brian Barry-Murphy said, per Wales Online: “When you lose a game of that nature it’s pretty sickening. We are all disappointed. We created enough chances to win any game.

“But when you play against a team like Burton who defended so deep with so many numbers, and you don’t score the goals you feel you should, there’s always an opportunity for them to score at the end of the game and they did.

“We created more chances than we did in any other game this season, but it doesn’t really mean anything when you lose the game. The frustration for the players and the staff is evident, we just have to know how to turn that dominance into wins and that’s the objective as the season goes on.

“The team served him pretty well. We had an enormous amount of crosses, we could have crossed the ball even more. The quality of our crosses were inconsistent, but the good-quality crosses we put into the box, Yousef looked really dangerous.

“You saw in the first half, Chris Willock crossed for him to score – that wasn’t a free-kick. His movement was exceptional, that’s the type of striker he is. You saw glimpses of what he can do.

“His movement was brilliant. That’s what an elite striker does. He’s taken the defender to the near post and lost him really quickly off the back post.

“The cross was perfect and it was a brilliant finish. It was clearly a goal, but we had enough chances to win the game, so I wouldn’t be looking at the referee as the person responsible for us not winning the game.”

Burton boss Gary Bowyer said, per South Wales Guardian: “The credit all goes to the players because Saturday wasn’t the standard, it wasn’t what we’re about and we knew we were coming to a very, very difficult place, they’ve got a great manager, the way they are coached, the way that they play.

“We knew we were up against it, we knew we wouldn’t have a lot of the ball, but we asked them to show some fight and represent the club in a better manner than we did on Saturday and it was incredible.

“I think the supporters that made their way down today, it’s incredible that…(we’ve) sent them home with those scenes and ever since I arrived at the club that’s what it’s been about, creating memories.

Here’s how Twitter users reacted as Brian Barry-Murphy describes Cardiff’s defeat to Burton ‘sickening’ with fans left embarrassed…

@CCFCMando: 78% possession, over double their shots, 8 big chances missed. Absolutely shocking display today, played as if we had no ideas in their half. Unacceptable to lose to that bottom of the league dross at home when we’re supposed to be “challengers” 🖕🏻

@ElisDavies5: 20 shots and I can think of maybe 2 or 3 at the very most that were actually any good. We look fucking abysmal in the final 3rd. Dicking about the edge of the box and can’t score at home to bottom of the league.

@asoundreaction: Too slow, too ponderous. No player willing to take on their man or make something happen. 80% possession. 400 passes around the box and no crosses despite us having a 9ft striker. Awful doesn’t come close to describing this performance.

@NigelBlues: We had 20 shots but only a couple put Burton’s keeper into action … it’s the story of almost every game. I dont see us creating enough meaningful efforts to go with the possession & domination. Crossing/set pieces off par, strikers having scraps, few being direct. Work to do

@TDW9696: Can you set some time aside in training to teach the players how to take corners properly please

@chrisbrad75: Burton came with a game plan and executed it. 11 men behind the ball hoping to nick one. We were too slow in centre midfield and no wingers with pace

@BowenWilkie: Burton Albion 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 bottom of the 3rd tier weren’t they 🤣🤣🤣

@GigiXBardi: We had no number 6 or defensive cover in midfield when Wintle and Turnbull were subbed. Then we lost balance in midfield then eventually conceded. It’s the first time I saw desperation in BBM tactics. @CardiffCityFC

@PaulMer53: This is why we are in this division and will stay in this division boys because we can’t beat the rubbish clubs no excuses well done Burton Albion your 2nd win of the season first one away in 7 games 👍

@davies250395: The lack of opportunities created will again be a concern – thought we had the same problem Saturday. That said we have to take the chances that do come our way and we had some decent ones. Bit of pressure now after back to back home defeats. Support will be key with a young squad

@Anthony_Burns: Salech got absolutely no protection or any decision off the officials and it’s not the 1st time that’s happened. He can’t put in a strong challenge without getting penalised. Plenty to complain about tonight, but I can’t be bothered. Do better on Saturday

@sld77i: The players have believed the hype and expect to walk the league. But they need to earn their wages & the manager needs to understand that you can’t play tip tap football every game. They just had to sit & then get one on the break

@CallumCFS: Absolutely pathetic. Been awful the last few league games. Fix it or we wont be in playoffs.

@JordanQuaite92: Frustrating. Didn’t take our chances against a team that parked the bus for 90 minutes.

@JoeWilsTyrch: This result is proof my fears are becoming a reality. I said week 4 keeping the players grounded, humble & hard working would be key. Yes they created chances & yes the officiating team likely got some calls wrong. Focus on what you can control!
