Canada boss Marsch eases fears around Davies injury

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch revealed that Alphonso Davies’ latest injury for Bayern Munich is nothing serious.

Davies returned off the bench for Bayern in their Champions League victory over Atalanta after suffering a muscle injury against Frankfurt last month, but the left-back only played 26 minutes before going off with another injury.

The 25-year-old has just played eight league games this season and made four appearances in the Champions League as he struggles to maintain his fitness following his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury last year.

Davies is also set to captain Canada, who are co-hosting the World Cup this summer along with the United States and Mexico.

He also has an important role in the coming months with Bayern as Vincent Kompany’s side look to complete the treble this season.

They are 11 points clear at the Bundesliga summit, while they are also one of the favourites to win the Champions League and DFB-Pokal, where they face Bayer Leverkusen in the semi-final.

Although Davies will not be fit for Canada’s upcoming friendlies against Iceland and Tunisia, Marsch expects a swift return for the full-back.

“I’ve spoken to him. He’s obviously a little sad and frustrated,” Marsch told TSN.

“But he said that this injury – even compared to the one he had about a month ago – is much less severe.

“It will probably take him two to three weeks to get back.

“My message to him was: ‘Stay positive. It is not easy when you come back from such a long-term injury.

“Everything will be fine. You are young and strong. We just have to take the right steps to make sure that no further setbacks happen.

“We will probably not call him into the squad in March and leave him in Munich so that he becomes fully fit again. That is ok. I am confident that he will do exactly that.”
