The 2025-26 UEFA Champions League goalscorers is beginning to take shape as we reached the knockout stage, and the race to be crowned European champions in Budapest’s Puskás Aréna is taking shape in spectacular fashion. With the expanded 36-team league phase now complete, the contenders have been separated from the pretenders, and several teams have emerged as clear favourites to lift the trophy. Here is a breakdown of the sides most likely to go all the way.

Arsenal: The Team to Beat

If you listen to the bookmakers and data analysts, Arsenal is the clear favorite to snag their first-ever Champions League title. Mikel Arteta’s squad has made waves by becoming the first team to achieve a flawless 100% record in the Champions League phase, winning all eight of their matches and allowing just four goals, a defensive feat that highlights how tough they’ve become, according to various football betting sites.

The Gunners have truly been a breath of fresh air this season. Their rock-solid defence, creative midfield, and sharp attack have turned them into a force to be reckoned with across Europe. Arteta has spoken with his usual passion about his team’s goals, stating before their match against Inter Milan: “In the Champions League, when you have the chance to achieve something, you have to seize it.” He’s also been refreshingly honest about what it takes to win the biggest prize in European football, telling ESPN: “When you reach that stage, you have to give everything for it.” The real question is whether Arteta’s team can keep up their high standards when the pressure ramps up and the stakes become incredibly high.

Bayern Munich: Clinical and Dangerous

Just behind Arsenal in the rankings, Bayern Munich is a team that has really hit its stride under the leadership of Vincent Kompany. Harry Kane continues to be a scoring machine, and Kompany’s squad has only dropped points in five matches across all competitions in the 2025-26 season, with just one slip-up in the league, finishing as runners-up, an impressive display of consistency.

Kompany has praised his team’s winning mentality, especially after a series of comeback wins, saying, “It’s a great quality of ours that we always manage to make the difference.” He’s also emphasized that the philosophy guiding his team is refreshingly straightforward: “If there’s space, you go for goal, it’s as simple as that. Basically, everything we do with the ball has to put us in a better position to score.” With Jamal Musiala back in shape and a well-organized squad that can dominate most rivals, the Bavarians seem poised to secure their 11th European title.

Manchester City: Dangerous but Inconsistent

Pep Guardiola’s team has been a powerhouse in European football for quite some time now. Even though this season has had its ups and downs, they still pose a significant threat in the knockout stages. City managed to just scrape into the top eight during the league phase, but the talent in their squad means they should never be underestimated.

That said, their performance in European competitions has been a bit underwhelming this year. Guardiola himself has recognized the challenges they’ve faced, especially during a tough mid-season stretch, saying, “Everything is a little bit turning against us for many, many things… at that level, the Champions League or United at the top level, it’s always more difficult to have consistency.” However, as City has started to find their rhythm again, a newfound determination has emerged, “I don’t have any doubts in this competition,” he stated, indicating that the Spanish manager is confident his team can still make a serious push in Budapest.

Barcelona: The Dark Horse

Barcelona might not be the talk of the town this season, but don’t let that fool you—they’re a serious threat. Under the guidance of Hansi Flick, the Catalan club has skilfully mixed youthful talent with a growing sense of European experience, creating a thrilling blend of emerging stars and the solid foundation of one of the world’s top clubs.

Flick has been open about their ambitions and the areas they need to work on, recently stating, “We are working to be better every day. We have to improve the little things, even the very small ones, in order to make progress. That’s what it’s about and, of course, we also have a chance of winning the Champions League. It is a very big goal for us, and we work every day for it.” He’s also been firm about their playing style, asserting, “We are Barça and we want to play our football.” With Lamine Yamal shining brightly, Barça has the offensive power to challenge anyone on their best days.

Liverpool: Faded Favourites

Liverpool kicked off the season as the favourites to take home the trophy, but a slump in their domestic performance has really put a dent in those hopes. Even though they managed to secure a decent third place in the league, Arne Slot’s team has struggled to find their rhythm lately, and their ups and downs in the Premier League have understandably raised concerns about their chances in Europe.

Slot has been refreshingly honest about the hurdles they face, calling this the toughest season of his managerial journey “by a mile.” When discussing what it would take to turn things around, he emphasized, “We have to come close to perfection.” He hasn’t shied away from the reality of what missing out on next season’s Champions League would mean, stating, “If we don’t have Champions League football, it’s definitely not been an acceptable season.” On a brighter note, Liverpool’s performances in Europe have been much more solid, so they shouldn’t be counted out as contenders in the knockout stages.

Real Madrid: The Sleeping Giant

No Champions League preview feels complete without a nod to Real Madrid, even if this season has been a bit of a struggle for Los Blancos. They’ve found themselves outside the top eight for the second year in a row, facing a tough climb ahead, though they did manage to get past Benfica over two legs to reach the round of 16.

New manager Álvaro Arbeloa has made his ambitions crystal clear since stepping into the role, stating at his introduction: “This club is all about winning, winning, and winning again, it’s about having the drive to secure trophies and fill that trophy cabinet. That’s my obsession.” More recently, just before the Benfica match, he was just as direct: “Our aim isn’t just to knock out Benfica; we’re here to win the Champions League, because that’s what this badge demands of us.” With Kylian Mbappé dealing with a knee issue, the path ahead looks tricky, but Real Madrid, as always, is never truly out of the race.

The Verdict

This year’s Champions League is shaping up to be quite the spectacle. Arsenal’s impressive consistency makes them the frontrunners, but Bayern Munich is definitely a strong contender. However, in the world of European football, things can take unexpected turns once the knockout stages kick in. With Barcelona’s flair, City’s top-notch talent, and Liverpool’s wealth of experience, the journey to Budapest is sure to be exciting and whoever comes out on top in Hungary this May will have truly earned their victory.
