Matchday 3 of the UEFA Champions League delivered drama, goals, and statements of intent from Europe’s heavyweights. Across two nights, the continent’s top clubs flexed their muscles, while others were left scrambling to keep their campaigns alive. Here’s a full roundup of the action from October 21 and 22.

Tuesday, October 21: Fireworks in Spain, England, and Germany

The night belonged to Barcelona, who dismantled Olympiacos 6-1 at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. Fermín López stole the show with a hat-trick, while Lamine Yamal converted from the spot and Marcus Rashford added a brace. The Greek side’s lone goal came via a penalty from El Kaabi, but it was a mere consolation in a game dominated by Hansi Flick’s men.

In London, Arsenal continued their perfect start with a 4-0 demolition of Atlético Madrid. After a tense first half, the Gunners erupted with four goals in 13 minutes. Gabriel opened the scoring with a header, followed by Gabriel Martinelli and a quickfire brace from Viktor Gyökeres. Mikel Arteta’s side remains watertight at the back, yet to concede in the competition.

Meanwhile, in Leverkusen, Paris Saint-Germain sent a chilling message to the rest of Europe with a 7-2 rout of Bayer Leverkusen. Ousmane Dembélé, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Désiré Doué were among the scorers in a game that featured two penalties and two red cards. PSG’s attacking depth was on full display, and the reigning champions still look every bit the team to beat.

Elsewhere, Manchester City earned a professional 2-0 win at Villarreal, while PSV stunned Napoli 6-2 in Eindhoven, exposing the Italians’ defensive frailties. Inter Milan also impressed, cruising past Union Saint-Gilloise 4-0 to maintain their perfect record.

Wednesday, October 22: Bayern and Real Stay Perfect, Liverpool Roar Back

If Tuesday was about attacking fireworks, Wednesday showcased dominance and redemption. At the Allianz Arena, Bayern Munich thrashed Club Brugge 4-0, with 17-year-old Lennart Karl making headlines as the club’s youngest-ever Champions League scorer. Harry Kane, Luis Díaz, and Nicolas Jackson also found the net, underlining Bayern’s frightening depth.

In Madrid, Real edged Juventus 1-0 in a tense affair at the Bernabéu. Jude Bellingham’s second-half strike sealed the points, keeping Los Blancos perfect ahead of a mouthwatering El Clásico this weekend.

England’s representatives had mixed fortunes. Chelsea hammered Ajax 5-1 at Stamford Bridge, easing pressure on their domestic struggles, while Liverpool silenced critics with a win by the same scoreline away to Eintracht Frankfurt. Goals from Hugo Ekitike, Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Ibrahima Konaté, and Dominik Szoboszlai gave Arne Slot breathing room after a torrid run of form. However, defensive lapses remain a concern for the Reds.

Elsewhere, Atalanta beat Slavia Prague 2-0, Sporting CP edged Marseille 2-1, and Monaco and Tottenham played out a goalless draw in the Principality. Galatasaray continued their resurgence with a 3-1 win over Bodø/Glimt, powered by a Victor Osimhen brace.

The Big Picture: Who’s Flying High?

After three rounds, five clubs boast perfect records: Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Arsenal, and Real Madrid. PSG lead the way with 13 goals scored and just three conceded, while Inter remain the only side yet to concede a goal. Bayern and Real look ominously efficient, and Arsenal’s blend of defensive solidity and attacking flair makes them genuine contenders.

Behind them, Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City are well-placed with seven points each, while Barcelona and Liverpool have recovered from early setbacks to sit comfortably in the top half of the table. Newcastle United, Chelsea, and Sporting CP round out the current playoff spots, but the margins are razor-thin.

For others, the alarm bells are ringing. Juventus remain winless, while Napoli and Atletico Madrid have suffered damaging defeats. Bayer Leverkusen’s heavy loss to PSG leaves them rooted near the bottom, and Ajax’s campaign is in tatters after three straight defeats.

What Lies Ahead

Matchday 4 in early November promises fireworks.

Real Madrid travel to face Liverpool at Anfield, where they were beaten last season. PSG and Bayern will present a proper test for each other at the Parc des Princes. Manchester City welcome Borussia Dortmund to the Etihad, and Newcastle play host to Athletic Bilbao.

Chelsea and Barcelona will both travel to face Qarabag and Club Brugge, respectively. Things should also be interesting in Lisbon, where Benfica welcome Bayer Leverkusen, as should in Marseille, where Atalanta come to take on Olympique.

It doesn’t seem very likely for Kairat to pose any serious threat to Inter in Milan, but this is football; you never know.

And all these matches are just a brief selection from the upcoming round.

Matchday 3 reaffirmed the dominance of Europe’s elite but also reminded us of the unpredictability that makes the Champions League special. With 71 goals scored across two nights, the road to Budapest is already shaping up to be a classic.
