As the soccer world prepares to say its goodbyes to Christen Press, it also prepares to say its goodbyes to the end of an era.
Press’ retirement announcement is the latest in a long string, from Carli Lloyd to Alex Morgan, from Sam Mewis and Megan Rapinoe to Tobin Heath. And that’s not even the full list. At this point, it’s nearly the entirety of the 2015 and 2019 U.S. women’s national team World Cup winning squads. The same teams that went on to fight for equal pay and are known best for leaving the game better than they found it in myriad ways.
Press is no exception. She was part of the Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) league as a member of magicJack, went on to play in Sweden, before returning to Chicago and the National Women’s Soccer League, then played a stint with Manchester United in England’s Women’s Super League, scoring everywhere she went. She returned home in 2022, becoming the first player to sign with Angel City FC, to the delight of fans.
