Coach reveals Man Utd youngster’s main strength

Manchester United fans have been given more insight into the skillset of 17-year-old striker Chido Obi, who has featured in four first-team games since last month.

Obi arrived from Arsenal in September with a huge reputation at youth level for his prolific goalscoring. United have experienced that with 12 goals in nine appearances across the Under-18 Premier League and FA Youth Cup.

He was promoted to the Under-21 squad in January, before joining the senior side in February.

During this international break, Obi has played his first two games for Denmark’s Under-21 team, appearing as a substitute in friendlies against Poland and Italy – both ending in draws.

Obi is up to five years younger than some of his teammates and those he was going up against, but still managed to impress coach Steffen Hojer.

“He is a very young man. He was there to learn, and we had him with us to assess him,” Hojer told Danish publication Tipsbladet. “He makes a good impression, and I was extremely pleased to see how he adapted to the squad and how the boys welcomed him.

“He has had a really good trip and has shown himself well. Now, it’s back home to continue working at Manchester United and see if he can get a bit more playing time there.”

Discussing Obi’s particular abilities as a striker, Hojer reference a clinical streak and positional sense.

“What you hope for with a player like him is that he gets that one chance because his absolute key strength is being in the box and putting the ball in the net,” the coach explained.

“That chance didn’t come. But he came in and worked with the team in a tough situation, so you couldn’t really expect much more from him.”
