Concerned Leicester fans protest against the club’s board before Norwich game

Concerned Leicester fans protest against the club’s board before their side’s game against Norwich on Saturday afternoon.

The Foxes are hoping end their eight-game winless Championship streak and climb out of the relegation zone, sitting third-bottom, a point behind West Brom, despite picking-up back-to-back draws under new boss Gary Rowett, at Stoke last Saturday and at Middlesbrough on Tuesday, but have been defeat in their past three games at the King Power.

Norwich climbed to 17th, eight points clear of the drop-zone after following last weekend’s home loss to Birmingham with a 2-0 win against Sheffield Wednesday at Carrow Road in midweek.

Prior to the game, the fanbase protested against the way the club is being run and “very, very poor management”, from winning the Premier League title in 2016 to battling to avoid relegation to League One a decade later, not helped by the recent six point deduction after a breach of Profit and Sustainability Rules.

UNITE FOR CHANGE SAID:

With King Power as owners, Leicester City supporters experienced some of the greatest moments in our history, and that gratitude will always remain.

However, after years of sustained decline on and off the pitch, culminating in the recent points deduction as a result of multiple PSR breaches, it is now undeniable that the club’s current ownership model and leadership are no longer fit for purpose.

For Leicester City to rebuild with stability, restore standards and reconnect with its supporters, new ownership is now required.

Join us for a protest march prior to the Norwich match.

When: Saturday 28th February. March departs at 11.30. Meet Point: Outside F Bar on Walnut Street.

End Point: Outside of the club shop at King Power Stadium.

Once we reach the stadium, please stick together and make your voices heard.

Turn up, bring your banners, bring your voices and take this opportunity to make a real difference.

WE WANT OUR LEICESTER BACK.

Curtain call.

Time to show up and be counted.

Some will stay on the sidelines & comment from a distance.

Others will step forward and stand up for what they believe in.

Both options are fine.

We know which side we’ll be on.

Back the team. Not the regime.

@ciarandurham said: “My thoughts on the current state of Leicester City football club and Why change is needed ASAP.

“The current state of Leicester City FC has left a huge number of supporters including myself feeling completely disconnected from the club they grew up loving.

“This is not about one bad season, one relegation, or one poor transfer window. It is about a slow and painful decline that has been happening in front of our eyes for years.

“It feels like the club has lost its identity, its values, and its understanding of what Leicester City is actually supposed to represent.

“Ever since Vichai tragically passed away in 2018, something fundamental has been missing. Vichai was not just an owner who bankrolled success. He genuinely cared and that care was felt everywhere. He cared about the players on the pitch, about the staff working behind the scenes, about the supporters in the stands, and about the city of Leicester as a whole.

“Under Vichai, the club felt deeply connected to the city. He invested in the local community, he showed up, and he made people feel valued.

“Fans felt appreciated rather than taken for granted. Staff felt secure and respected. Even when Leicester achieved the impossible, the club never lost its humility.

“There was a feeling that Leicester City belonged to the people, that it was something everyone shared and protected together. The football club reflected the city itself. Hard working, proud, resilient, and together…

On February 28th, we’ll march to protect the future of our club.

It’s time for King Power to sell.

It’s time for change.#UniteforChange #LCFC pic.twitter.com/jS3wOp9a1C

“That feeling has slowly disappeared since Top took over. While Top inherited an unbelievable platform and a fanbase that was fully on board, the emotional connection between the club and the city has faded year by year.

“The club now feels distant and corporate. Decisions feel cold and disconnected. Supporters no longer feel listened to, and there is a growing sense that the people at the top do not fully understand the responsibility they have to the city and the people who support the club week in, week out.

“When Top took over, Leicester had everything going for it. A loyal fanbase that was obsessed with the club. A clear footballing identity. Elite facilities. A world class training ground being built.

“Leicester were respected across English football for being smart, well run and values driven. They were a so called smaller club that had broken the status quo and proved you could compete at the top without losing your soul.

“The teams that survived the Great Escape and went on to win the Premier League in 2016 were the perfect example of that. Those players were underpaid compared to the rest of the league but massively overachieved.

“They worked harder than everyone else. They fought for each other. They trusted the manager and bought fully into the culture of the club. Every player knew what it meant to wear the badge. The connection between the pitch and the stands was real and powerful. That team felt like it represented the city of Leicester.

“Now, the contrast is painful. Under the current ownership structure and the football operations led by Rudkin, the club has been mismanaged at almost every level. Recruitment has been scattergun and reactive, with no clear long term vision. Short term fixes have replaced proper planning. Poor decisions have been doubled down on rather than corrected.

“The most damaging failure of all has been contract management. Over f200 million worth of players have walked out of the club for nothing. That is money that could have been reinvested, refreshed the squad, and kept the club competitive. Instead, it was allowed to disappear through indecision and complacency.

“What we are left with now is one of the most expensive squads in the club’s history that consistently underperforms. Players are on wages that do not reflect their output or effort. The hunger that once defined Leicester teams has gone. The intensity has gone. The accountability has gone. Watching Leicester now feels like watching a group of players who are comfortable rather than desperate, protected rather than challenged.”

Rowett said before the game on the protests, per Leicester Mercury: “I think that however everyone feels and everyone has that right to do whatever they want to do.

“Listen, there’s a lot of people, including the people at the club that are passionate about the club, that want the club to be successful, so you can understand frustrations.

“I think the main bit for me really, and I spoke about it, the only way we win games of football and the only way we improve the situation is if we’re galvanised and all together.

“So hopefully by the time the game kicks off, everyone’s in the stadium, everyone’s looking positive and trying to help each other to achieve the result we want. I think that’s the main thing.

“Work hard and win games, there’s no secret to football is there? I’ve never met, well, I’ve met a few, but I haven’t met many fans that you go and work hard as a team and win a game of football, and they don’t feel like their Saturday evening is an awful lot better for that process.

“That’s the only way you can do it, so that comes on the pitch. I’m not a big believer in that the fans have to lift the players. I think the players have to show a performance that allows the fans to get behind.

“Every single Leicester fan, if they see players chasing and showing that real heart and fight and fire, we’ve got the quality, if we show that, I believe that every fan will get behind us and we’ve seen that in the two away games so far.

“A brilliant following, got behind the players, clapped them off afterwards, you can see they’re super proud of the efforts and probably almost compartmentalising, what’s happened before these two games is nothing to do with me and nothing to do with the way that we want to do things.

“So ultimately it’s really getting behind that I think and and it will make a big difference.”

Leicester City chairman Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha said in his programme notes, per Leicester Mercury: “Between now and the end of the season Gary will bring deep knowledge of the Championship to our team and strong experience of the situation we now face in these final 12 games – a fight for survival in the division.

“As one Club, our collective focus is on providing every support possible to Gary, the staff and players to help find the solutions we need.

“Gary’s positive impact on the squad has already been visible in his first two games – challenging trips to Stoke City and Middlesbrough that have seen much improved performances and two hard-earned points.

“Those improvements have also strengthened the vital connection between our players and our fans, whose support is always so strong on the road.

“Thank you to everyone that made the trips to Stoke and to Middlesbrough, I’m looking forward to seeing how the team can build on those improvements in front of our home fans today, which can give energy to the whole stadium.”
