Coventry and Southampton’s players and staff clash after the final whistle as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw on Saturday.
Sky Sports reports that Frank Lampard – having been on the receiving end of “Shit Steven Gerrard” chants from the Southampton fans for much of the match – aimed gestures multiple times towards the Saints fans after the match to spark a melee on the pitch.

The Sky Sports commentator can be heard saying as the whistle blows: “Seconds remain and that’s it well that’s a terrific point for the league leaders Frank Lampard will take that after seeing his side go down to 10 men inside 90 seconds of the second half.
“You can see what he thinks about it, a punch of the air, because his side were on the back foot for most of that second but they dug in and only conceded the one goal, the header from Nathan Wood, his first goal for Southampton but try as they might Saints couldn’t find a winning goal and it’s been a frustrating afternoon for them in the end.
“Words being exchanged between Lampard and one or two of the Saints players he did make a little bit of a gesture towards the northern end away to our left-hand side but that’s what it means the stakes are high here, how do you sum it all up Andy?
Andy: “My emotions running high at the end of the game I can understand it both sides desperately want to win but I think this is another example of why Coventry are going to get promoted because again they have to change their personnel the dominant team they had the lead then they had a man sent off.
“They dug deep good substitutions from Frank to see the job out so they gained a point where many sides would probably go on and lost the game so, Southampton I feel they didn’t probably do enough to push on and win it well there’s a lack of Christmas spirit here at the end of the game and it’s all kicking off once again words between Lampard and the Saints fans away to our left the players getting involved and like I say this is not quite goodwill to all men at the end of the game.
“The points are shared it’s a point apiece a precious point for Coventry as they go six clear ahead of the 3pm games Frank Lampard getting the away end going, that’s a terrific result.”
Interviewer: “You had a conversation with Taylor Harwood-Bellis at the end of the game. Tempers were flaring at that point. What was said? How did that start?”
Lampard: “I’ve got no problem with Taylor. It’s fine. I understand when a player defends in front of their own fans, defends the situation.
“But we’ve got this modern-day phenomenon where I think fans can say anything to you for the last 10 minutes on the line and you’re not allowed to walk onto the pitch when you’ve got emotions high. So I am heart on my sleeve. I feel a bit calmer now.
“Apologies for language maybe with that that stand will apologise for their language, I’m well and truly over that one and it got a bit heated but I think you know sometimes you take that 99 minutes and you’re hanging on and seeing the players do what they do I feel it will live with them and you know one on the pitch is my prerogative.
“Yeah, I can look back and reflect on it, but yeah, as I say, you know fans can say one thing but we’re the ones in the arena fighting for something and we’ve got a point.”
Lampard told BBC CWR:
“At half-time, I wouldn’t have said that [it was a good point] because we were fantastic in the first half.
“Considering the game prep we’ve had with people falling ill in the last couple of days and some players have played slightly below par as well but you wouldn’t have noticed that.
“Then the context of the red card, the decisions in the first half, but our spirit, our effort, our desire to try to hang on to what we had at the end of the game was very special.
“I’m delighted with the performance, I’m delighted with the point considering we had 10 men in the second half.”
Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert told BBC Radio Solent:
“We played to win in the end, it’s something that we keep emphasising with the players. We play to win and that’s the most important thing.
“Today it’s disappointment because I think the chances were there to come away with three points.
“I think they kept a back four for quite long after they got the red card and it was a little bit easier because we had space then on the sides to drive.
“But when they went to a back-five, it was a little bit different. I still think we got in some very promising positions. Maybe not enough personnel in the final moments but it’s a good team and we managed to play the whole game in their half.
“I think there were more than enough chances to win the game in the end.”
Twitter users reacted as they saw Coventry and Southampton’s players and staff clash after the final whistle…
@ChalfontStRob: Mourinho-esque from Lampard there! #PUSB
@SkyBlueCrampy: They had a whole half to beat our 10 men… Think you need to argue amongst yourselves lads..
@burnsieboy65: Southampton had won their previous 4 games at home, Coventry went down to ten men for most all of the second half and managed to hold out for a point, I’d be fucking chuffed to come away with a point.
