Coventry City come from behind as their 3-1 win condemns Sheffield United to an 11th league defeat of the season.

The Sky Blues rallied from 1-0 down at half-time to defeat a struggling Blades side and extend their Championship lead at the top to four points.

Ex-Coventry player Sam McCallum stunned the hosts when he tapped in after Ben Mee’s flick-on from a corner on the 25th minute,.

But then Tatsuhiro Sakamoto finished low from a long throw to make it 1-1 on 49 minutes. Then goalkeeper Adam Davies (who came on for injured Michael Cooper) misjudging a punch; Bobby Thomas headed in to make it 2-1, then Haji Wright made it 3-1 squared for Brandon Thomas-Asante to score with the last kick of the game.

It means that Coventry have now scored 39 goals this season, 12 more than any other team in England’s top four divisions.

Despite a midweek loss at Wrexham, they are five points above third-placed Middlesbrough, but for Sheffield United, they are third-bottom, 11 defeats in 14 games, more losses than in the entire 2024-25 campaign.

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield:

“We just can’t feel sorry for ourselves. We’re disappointed, it didn’t look like a team at the bottom of the division versus one at the top who are flying. We were well in the game right until the 94th minute.

“We have to defend our goal better, you’ve seen the second one and the first one we’ve not tracked a runner. It’s a long throw that we’ve got to deal with.

“There were lots of encouraging signs in the first half, I thought the attitude of the team was really good. I thought the way we played, we caused them problems.

“We were always in it but that isn’t enough for me because we haven’t got anything from it.

“I’m learning about certain things left, right and centre and January can’t come quick enough, as you can imagine, to make the obvious changes that we need to make to give ourselves a better chance going forward.”

Wilder, per Sky Sports:

“A lot of good things, toe-to-toe with the best team in the league who are scoring goals left, right and centre, winning games left, right and centre.

“The goals are avoidable, a long throw we switch off on the edge of the box after half-time and the second goal you’ve seen that one as well, not dealt with that, it’s unfortunate these things happen.

“I thought we were in the game for long periods, especially late on, and we just have to deal with that direct play and we’ve not really dealt with it.

“We scored our goal from a set play, they scored two from set plays. Up to half-time I was delighted with the game plan, delighted with the contribution of the players.

“They will always cause you a few issues with the quality that they’ve got but I thought we caused them just as many in terms of how we went about it and were well in the game.

“I didn’t feel there was two goals in the game but there it is, a team that’s got confidence and belief with a team that’s struggling a little bit.

“But up to half-time there was enough in it for me to encourage me and everybody and the support that we can get a result.”

Coventry City boss Frank Lampard told BBC Radio Coventry & Warwickshire:

“I’m delighted with how the players have managed to win that game. It was absolutely deserved of course but it was brilliant character and when you think of the details of the game and how it went we were outstanding.

“I know there was a personnel change [at half-time] but it was more like the feeling of the team and can we come out with a load of force and energy. A tactical change is one thing but can we as a team run a bit more, play forward a bit more and be a bit more threatening and we absolutely did do that.

“It was great to get an early goal because that gives the players and the stadium a real belief.

“They’re no mugs at all. They’re a good team regardless of their league position and they wont finish anywhere near where they are because they’ve got good players.”

Lampard said, per Sky Sports:

“They’re no mugs obviously. Their league position is what it is but they’re a good team and I’ve got a lot of respect for Chris [Wilder] so I knew it was a tough match.

“The second half was what we want to be, what we’ve been for big parts of the season, real energy in the team with the way we play.

“We made little tactical tweaks but the main tweak was our approach to the game, how fast we were and how much pressure we put on them and that changed the course of the match.

“If we want to have success this season it has to be off that. If you look at our big performances this year, they have been that.

“When we’ve blown teams away, which fortunately we have at times, it’s been more power, pace, play forward, run forward, support each other and move forward and we do that a lot.

“I know you can’t always do it for 90 minutes but we have to believe that’s what we can be as a team and that was there in the second half.

“I was delighted with the way they saw the game out, a lot of corners later on in the game, but we dug in and you have to sometimes.”

Here’s how fans reacted after Coventry come from behind as their 3-1 win condemns Sheffield United to ab 11th league defeat…

@FG_utb2: Just thought I’d remind you all we’re playing again on Saturday 👍🏻. How fun

@LewisSwfc1: Don’t worry lads, you’ll climb that table once wilder comes in and sorts you out!

@AshbourneJEA: Massive fan of wilder coming over to away end when we win, and walking down tunnel when we lose btw. When we’ve been three away games on trot all midweek. Blokes biggest fan, but that is absolutely bollock-less.

@sufc1971: Loads giving players stick (rightly so) but giving Wilder a free ride. Managers job to instil some fight into them. If it’s just down to the players then no manager in history would ever be sacked. #twitterblades

@SW_1889: Criminal from Davies, he’s stealing a wage; these players are so soft though. O’Hare and McCallum aside they’re embarrassing. No personality whatsoever. Wilder must be furious, shipping 3 again whilst largely being well in the game and creating enough. Weak mentality.

@jh_blade: Wilder’s gotta be called out here. The constant trend of conceding between 45-60 mins has to be questioned. What does he say at HT to get them to always perform like this???

@BAZLORD: Miles better performance… cannon miles better than cambell should have stayed on for me….. on to the next one. At least Burrows has got someone fighting for his place we need more of that…. ⚔️⚔️⚔️

@dalemellor11: It’s getting more embarrassing how we can’t do the basics. Go ahead and go for a second for a change, we cannot defend a lead by sitting back. We haven’t learned anything.

@sufcdan12: The most useless spineless set of players ever to put on a United shirt. Disgraceful from Davies and no effort to get infront of there man in either box. Utter shite. Rebuild the side in Jan

@jonathonchapma2: 6 defeats in 9 for the messiah, what a return, obviously not his fault though, 9 goals conceded in 3 games, fucking wank

@jclear06: Put Davies into a cannon and fire him into the sun

@sufc1971: Well Selles wasn’t the answer and it’s looking like neither was Wilder.

@AlexanderSUFC: Seriously what gets said at halftime?!?? Absolute jokers.

@Piddie74: We have XC as our metric. Expected collapse…straight after half time its through the fucking roof. Better performance tonight. But every player, coaching staff, board member, ticket office staff, team bus driver can all fuck off. Sick of the fucking lot of you.

@siggysogg: Its obscene how lazy Campbell is btw

@DomWalton10: Proper in a rut aren’t we? Not a lack of effort (tonight at least), we’ve just got too many poor players that will make mistake after mistake, as proved again tonight. The 2nd choice keeper is a disgrace. Most of the back 4 shite as well. A bit of luck wouldn’t go a miss though.

@lazy1889: call me what you want idc… but i’m sick and tired of watching this fucking shite, don’t think i’ll be watching us for the rest of the season… miserable stuff

@Jonaswa27185025: relegate us now. there is no spine. we are a laughing stock every week. im honestly in awe of we can still be so shit. there is nothing going for us at all so embrace league 1 I guess and rebuild with the youth who have some passion about them. fuck off united. #twitterblades
