Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Cristian Romero has penned a long-term agreement with the club, only days after being named the new team captain in place of Son Heung-min.
The center-half arrived from Atalanta in 2021, and while his form in north London has been inconsistent at times, he has played a vital role for Argentina in recent years. Romero has been central to their recent international triumphs, lifting consecutive Copa América trophies and the 2022 World Cup.
His Spurs career initially included reckless moments and injury setbacks, particularly across the last year and a half. Yet his influence was undeniable last season as Tottenham captured the Europa League, their first piece of silverware in 17 years. Romero was recognized as Player of the Match in the final and later named the tournament’s standout performer.
Leadership role and future at Spurs
The Argentine’s close bond with former coach Ange Postecoglou saw him promoted to vice-captain in 2023. When the club parted ways with Postecoglou in June, speculation grew about Romero’s future, with Atlético Madrid among those linked. However, the rumors cooled, and new head coach Thomas Frank later hinted that the defender was focused on the upcoming campaign.
Romero’s position became clearer during preseason, as he stayed within the squad for Frank’s debut year. That clarity deepened last week when he was officially introduced as Spurs’ new captain, signaling an imminent announcement about his contract.
He immediately made his mark in the UEFA Super Cup, scoring in the victory, before leading Tottenham to a shutout against Burnley in their opening Premier League game. On Monday, the club confirmed Romero’s extended stay, with reports suggesting the deal runs until the summer of 2029.
Contract updates within the squad
Earlier on the same day, Spurs also revealed that Djed Spence had agreed to fresh terms after a strong calendar year. In addition, Rodrigo Bentancur is expected to finalize a new agreement soon, with his current contract set to expire next summer.
The attention of supporters has now shifted towards potential arrivals, with fans voicing their hope of seeing Eberechi Eze added to the squad in the near future.
