Crystal Palace delete taunting tweet as Liverpool suffer SIX defeats in seven

The Crystal Palace social media admin deletes a taunting tweet as their win means Liverpool suffer SIX defeats in seven.

Arne Slot’s gamble on a heavily rotated Liverpool lineup featuring three teenagers in the starting XI (and a further five on the bench) didn’t pay off, as Crystal Palace won 3-0 at Anfield to reach the Carabao Cup last 16.

Ismaila Sarr scored twice late in the first half due to poor defending and Yeremy Pino adding a third ti et up a quarter final tie against Arsenal.

Palace’s Twitter activity started by cheekily taunting Liverpool by posting a grinning photo of Marc Guehi ahead of their Carabao Cup, amid the Reds’ poor form of losing five of their last six matches, including a defeat to Palace a month ago and the Community Shield in August, plus frustrating Liverpool’s deadline-day transfer bid for Guehi.

Ahead of the match, Palace posted a photo of a beaming Guehi, captioning the post: “Taking on Liverpool, again. This time in the Carabao Cup.”

Then it continued, with their full time tweet read: “Liverpool again. W again.” But it seems that has since been deleted by the club.

They also updated their Twitter bio to “Sarr will tear you apart again 😉”

Some fans in the away end chanted “Can we play you every week” while the majority went with “you’re getting sacked in morning”.

Liverpool fans could be seem heading for the exits after Palace scored their third goal of the game.

Stephen Warnock, on BBC Radio 5 Live, said: “Arne Slot has almost admitted there that the squad is not strong enough. It was very much deflecting and making excuses.

“You’re a team in the Champions League, yet you’re moaning that you’re playing a game two days later. You know that is going to happen. I felt there were a lot of excuses in there. You know your squad depth isn’t the best, then your business hasn’t been good enough in the summer.”

Pat Nevin added: “Arne Slot has shown it is secondary, and it is certainly not as important as the games coming up.

“Yes, there will be a bit more stick. There will be a realisation among Liverpool fans, who aren’t daft, the fact is they have already won this competition.

“Liverpool have gone heavier for the big names with huge transfer fees compared to a bulkier squad, and it is noticeable now.”

Sky Sports’ Jamie Redknapp: “It was the wrong team. Make no mistake. He picked a team today that made it really difficult for himself. You’ve not helped the young players because of the players that are around them. You’ve made 10 changes from Brentford.

“You can’t tell me that he’s picked that team today and those subs thinking ‘that will get me a result against a really good Crystal Palace’. You might hope you can. I didn’t believe for one second they could beat them. He’s made a mistake today.

“He’s been unbelievable since he’s come to the club. He’s under some real pressure, but that’s football. That’s the price on the ticket. They climbed the mountain last season and were absolutely sensational. Now they’ve got to go back to that character they showed when they won the title and stick together.”

Liverpool boss Arne Slot:

“It’s not of Liverpool’s standards to lose five out of six, or six out of seven.

“Everybody can have their opinion about [the selection] but with the squad we have – maybe 15, 16 first-team players available – this is the choice I’ve made.”

On the performance: “First half an hour, we made it a game. Actually maybe we had the better chances in that first half hour.

“But after we conceded the 1-0 and just before half-time the 2-0, I knew, we knew, I think everybody in the stadium knew it would be very difficult to play against a structured team which, until now, I think it was only the Community Shield game where we were able to score twice against them. Especially with a team that hasn’t played together many times.”

Sky Sports: “Is Saturday’s game against Aston Villa a must-win?”

Arne Slot: “Every Liverpool game is a must-win.”

Slot, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: “You have every option where you can choose from, but the reality is also that there is not a lot of reasons why we have lost five out of six.

“None of them are enough to make up for the fact we have lost so many. It is clear in the last few weeks we have always had to play two days after we played the last game after a difficult game in Europe.

“If you look at the week coming up, that is going to be a big week for us, everyone and the club. We need as many players available as we can. You can see today with the line-up I had to make. I only rested the players that have played mainly in the last week. This is the line-up you get. That shows you we already have a few injuries. With a big week coming up for me, it felt the best choice.

“Combined with that, this club has always chosen in the League Cup to give playing time to young academy players as well. Our squad is probably not as big as people think it is. There has not been a change in the way we look at this.”

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: “Good win today. It took us 15 minutes to be in the game – we did well, scored nice goals, and controlled the game. I don’t know how often this happens when you play the champion three times within three months, and you win three times. So, credit to the players.”

On Liverpool’s team: “We didn’t know who they were going to play. Andy Robertson, Endo, Kerkez, and Mac Allister. Mac Allister is a world champion and yes, a few young players. Rio Ngumoha has shown already he can score goals.

“First 15 minutes we didn’t do well, we had the feeling we were still in the hotel beds. Played slowly into the game, we scored nice goals, the performance was OK, but it was not a great performance.”

Glasner, per Sky Sports:

“A fantastic result. I wasn’t very pleased with the first 15 minutes, it looked as if we were still in our hotel beds. But then we did very well, we scored very nice goals, we created a few good chances. We missed a few situations where our last ball wasn’t in the best way. But overall, winning 3-0 at Anfield is a great result. Winning three times in three months against Liverpool is exceptional.”
