Jarrod Bowen said West Ham’s “deserved” win over Newcastle was a “long time coming” and insisted all the players want to “change the situation we are in”.
The Hammers won only their second game of the season, and first since August, coming from behind to claim a 3-1 victory thanks to goals from Lucas Paqueta, a Sven Botman own goal and Tomas Soucek’s effort in stoppage time.
The win ended a series of seven games without tasting success, and a first home victory since February, and Bowen was delighted to get that winning feeling back at the London Stadium once again.
West Ham’s captain Bowen told Sky Sports: “It has been a long time coming. We know we haven’t been good enough at home and we wanted to change that.
“Sometimes you think your luck is against you and it will never change but we stuck in there. I don’t think we did anything different in terms of preparation. It is us as players understanding the situation we are in and wanting to change that.
“Different things have gone against us, set-pieces have gone against us and defending our goal. This time we deserved the win in the end.”
Hammers hero Potts: ‘We have stuck together’
Midfielder Freddie Potts came in for his first Hammers start and was hugely impressive. The 22-year-old said the players have stuck together during the difficult run and said the comeback win proved the character within the squad.
Potts told BBC 5 live: “I wanted to come here and get the win. I didn’t even think about anything with man of the match. It is now something to build on – we have a big chance of getting another three points next weekend.
“There is something about this week – we have been really together. We knew when the first goal went in we needed to bounce back and show the fans we have got character.
“There is a lot of noise from outside, it is so important that we stick together.”
Nuno: Win needs to be a platform
Manager Nuno Espirito Santo said winning for the first time as West Ham boss “feels really good” and said he was determined to ensure it was the start of a turnaround in fortunes for the club.
He said: “It feels really good. We are happy and proud of the way we played the game.
“That was the feeling but the boys did amazing and the reaction of the team was amazing. We had a lot of moments against us. Fantastic reaction.
“This means a lot for us, but nothing is done. We have a lot of work to do and we will start in the week trying to improve.”
Speaking to Match of the Day, he added: “The players are realising that winning in the Premier League, we have to work very hard.
“We will do it again. The win makes it easier, there are smiles and the legs feel easier.
“We see slight improvements on the pitch. We have to create a platform on the pitch.”
