Bayern Munich held off a fightback from Real Madrid to secure a 2-1 win in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the Bernabeu.
Luis Diaz scored just before the break following a dominant first half by Bayern, before Harry Kane doubled the advantage only 20 seconds after the restart, but Kylian Mbappe’s 74th-minute goal sparked a revival from the 15-time winners.
Plenty of chances came the hosts’ way as they pushed for an equaliser in what was a scintillating first leg in Madrid, but they were ultimately made to pay for their poor performance for much of the game as Vincent Kompany’s men held on to take a critical lead back to the Allianz Arena next week.
Check out our rundown of all the action and watch all the goals and key moments.
Diaz nets in dominant first half for Bayern
Dayot Upamecano missed a huge chance to capitalise on Bayern’s early pressure after completely mis-hitting his shot inside the six-yard box with the goal gaping after Harry Kane had guided the ball across goal from a free-kick.
But Real burst into life after 10 minutes and served a reminder of their threat when Vinicius Junior threaded in Kylian Mbappe, whose shot was saved well by Manuel Neuer.
Minutes later, another lightning-quick break up field saw the Brazilian to cut inside and let fly, which the Bayern stopper had to be on hand to save again.
Real continued to threaten on the break but their looseness at the back continued to prove their undoing, with mistakes playing out from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andriy Lunin presenting huge chances for Kane and Serge Gnabry to find the net.
Once again though, Mbappe was threatening up the other end, latching onto a through ball before forcing Neuer into another save from a tight angle.
Five minutes before the break, Bayern had the lead their dominance deserved after a typically slick move saw Gnabry play in Diaz, who opened his body and slotted the ball into the back of the net.
Kane nets early but Real rally
It took the visitors less than 30 seconds to double their lead after the break, with Kane caressing the ball with his sidefoot into the the net from the edge of the box for his 49th goal of the season.
Olise had tormented Alvaro Carrerras on the right flank throughout the game and he nearly scored a wonderful solo goal after gliding past the left-back plus another three or four before hit shot was saved.
Another Bayern goal seemed the only likely outcome as Real once again gave the ball away in their own defensive third, allowing Kane to advance but his shot was blocked, with an Upamecano header from the resulting corner falling just wide with Lunin all at sea once again.
It made Vinicius’ missed chance feel all the more costly for the hosts, after a mistake allowed the Brazilian to race clear and take it round Neuer, but he could only find the side netting at a tight angle.
Substitute Jude Bellingham made an immediate impact after coming on, driving forward before finding Mbappe who forced a superb save from Neuer, with Eder Militao then heading over from a great position.
Real seemed to come to life all of a sudden and Mbappe was just unable to bend the ball the right side of the post after a nice link-up with Vinicius.
The goal did finally come for Real to open up the tie again completely, with Alexander-Arnold sliding in Mbappe with a trademark pass – with England manager Thomas Tuchel watching no less – which the France striker just about turned over the line.
The mood completely changed inside the Bernabeu with Bayern suddenly looking vulnerable, with Vinicius denied a penalty shortly after Federico Valverde had let fly from distance, with Neuer then denying Vincius once again.
The German was kept busy by another dangerous shot by Militao from the edge of the box as the hosts really cranked up the pressure.
Substitute Jamal Musiala then couldn’t keep his close-range shot on target after fellow sub Alphonso Davies guided Olise’s cross into his path.
The action was never-ending as Mbappe found space on the edge of the box but side-footed shot once again bended just wide with Neuer rooted.
They were unable to find the all-important goal though and Bayern were able to hold on for what looks like a critical lead for the second leg, though based on the second half, the tie is far from over.
