Egypt boss hails Salah’s energy ahead of AFCON

Mohamed Salah’s enthusiasm with Egypt’s national team has drawn glowing praise from head coach Hossam Hassan, who believes the Liverpool forward remains among the elite performers in global football despite recent controversy at club level.

The 33-year-old arrived at the Africa Cup of Nations under scrutiny following outspoken remarks about Liverpool and manager Arne Slot earlier this month. Although the comments sparked debate, Salah later issued an apology, and support within Egypt has remained unwavering as he prepares for what could be his final AFCON campaign.

Youthful spirit in national team camp

Speaking in Agadir, Morocco, where Egypt are based ahead of their tournament opener against Zimbabwe, Hassan highlighted Salah’s attitude in training. The coach said the forward’s energy resembles that of a player at the very beginning of his international journey rather than a veteran approaching the latter stages of his career.

Hassan expressed confidence that Salah will make a major impact at the competition, insisting the captain will be among the standout performers and continue to be recognised as one of football’s top figures worldwide.

Club dispute put into perspective

Addressing the reaction to Salah’s remarks about Liverpool, the Egypt manager downplayed the situation. Hassan described the episode as a normal disagreement rather than a serious problem, stressing that similar situations can arise between players and their club coaches.

He also referenced a previous spell when Salah struggled for goals at Liverpool, noting that involvement with the national side helped him rediscover form. According to Hassan, that revival ultimately saw Salah return to club football performing at an even higher standard.

Egypt’s hopes and unfinished business

Salah will spearhead Egypt’s challenge alongside Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush, with the Pharaohs entering the tournament as second favourites behind hosts Morocco.

Although Egypt dominated the competition between 2006 and 2010 with three consecutive titles, success has eluded them during Salah’s time as captain. The forward has twice reached the final without lifting the trophy and now aims to finally secure continental glory in this edition of AFCON.
