Scoring 100 goals for a single club is a remarkable milestone, even at a historic institution like Manchester United. Over the decades, only a small number of players have managed to reach triple digits while donning the iconic red shirt.
Bruno Fernandes recently became the 19th player in the club’s history to achieve 100 or more goals. The Portuguese captain reached this landmark despite United’s recent struggles, making his accomplishment particularly noteworthy. While he has joined an elite group of goal scorers, there is still a long road ahead for him to match the records of some of the club’s all-time greats.
Here is a look at the players who have scored 100 or more goals for Manchester United.
Current stars and recent achievers
Fernandes has already surpassed notable names such as David Beckham, Eric Cantona, and Dwight Yorke, who never reached 100 goals for United. Among current players, Marcus Rashford is the only one on the list, though he is presently on loan at Barcelona and seems unlikely to return to the Red Devils. Rashford has accumulated 138 goals for his boyhood club, placing him 13th in United’s all-time scoring charts.
Other centurions close to Rashford include Ole Gunnar Solskjær with 126 goals, Andy Cole with 121, and Brian McClair, also on 121. Players like Stan Pearson and Tommy Taylor, with 135 and 131 goals, respectively, are slightly lower on the list, although Taylor boasts the best goal-to-game ratio among all United centurions at 0.69 per match.
Impressive goal-to-game records
Several players on the list also stand out for their efficiency. David Herd scored 143 goals in just 261 appearances, while Ruud Van Nistelrooy netted 150 goals in only 219 games, 149 of which were inside the penalty area. Cristiano Ronaldo is sandwiched between them with 145 goals over two spells at the club, though it took him 346 matches to reach 100.
Longevity contributed to the impressive tallies of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs, who spent their entire careers at United. Scholes, a central midfielder, managed 155 goals in 716 appearances, scoring his 100th against Wolverhampton Wanderers in March 2010. Giggs finished with 168 goals in 963 matches, ranking seventh among the club’s top scorers.
Mark Hughes, another Welshman, recorded 161 goals, while Dennis Viollet from the 1950s and ’60s amassed 173 in just 284 appearances, placing sixth on the list.
The club’s all-time legends
The top five United goal scorers are among the club’s most iconic figures. George Best, the 1968 Ballon d’Or winner, scored 179 times, establishing himself as both a football star and one of the first global sports celebrities. Jack Rowley managed 190 goals for United, his career spanning either side of World War II.
Denis Law, a 1962 signing from Aberdeen for £115,000, scored 243 goals over 11 years, cementing his hero status at Old Trafford despite also playing for Manchester City. Bobby Charlton, a Ballon d’Or winner himself, netted 245 goals across 746 appearances, earning recognition as one of United’s greatest players.
Wayne Rooney tops the club’s scoring charts with 253 goals in 559 matches, making him the highest-scoring player in Manchester United history and a modern-day icon of the club.
