Ex-footballer Andy Morrison gives an update on battling with a severe life-changing condition known as Ramsay Hunt paralysis syndrome.
The former Manchester City captain was diagnosed in late February 2026 with Ramsay Hunt syndrome which is rare condition which attacks the facial (cranial) nerve, leading to one-sided facial paralysis, weakness, and other issues.
He says in his videos that recovery can take 6–8 weeks or over a year, with around 70% chance of full recovery, and looks to continue fighting through it.

UPDATE – 5th March
“So, just a quick update, I’ve had a lot of messages because obviously stuff gets said and gets lost a little bit in translation but nine days ago I got diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt paralysis syndrome which is basically cranial nerve gets attacked in the brain or something by a virus.
“It can take, I don’t know, six to eight weeks. It can take over year for full recovery, but it’s a 70 % chance of full recovery.
“You know me, it’s the fucking 1% chance that 1% will be me. So, you know, I’ll get through it. This is day nine. It’s probably been the toughest day yet.
“Yeah, just to give an update and I’ll just touch base every couple of weeks just to let people know where I’m up to. But yeah, thanks for listening. Cheers.”
Thanks for the messages and love , its ment so much.⚽️💚💙🧡⚽️ pic.twitter.com/mTszSoeJXp

UPDATE – 9th March
“Okay, so it’s been a week since I posted. I do post every couple of weeks, but I thought I had to just put something out and just thank everyone for their kindness and the inundated messages of goodwill and you what you say. It’s been lovely, it really has.
“And I’ve tried to reply to as many as I can. But yeah, it’s you know, certainly the football family have reached out, know, whether it’s Plymouth or Blackpool, Huddersfield, Man City, it’s been really touching to receive the message I have.
“A friend of mine set up a, I didn’t know set up a GoFundMe page and I had a chat with him earlier on and I don’t need anything. If a week in Switzerland in high altitude wasn’t making a difference then maybe but there is nothing that can do this apart from just passage of time, one day at a time and just let Mother Nature repair the damage that’s been done, which you know, would probably take a bit longer and I thought I’d be back in the gym by now.
“But yeah, so again, thank you so much for all the kind messages and anyone who has sent anything or into that GoFundMe that that will all be returned because as I said, know, I really, really don’t need anything.
“I’m very, very, very fortunate to have a lot of people around me and a lot of love. So I’ll keep in touch and yeah, you know, I’m kind of looking at my, I think I’m a better than I did last week to be honest. I think there’s a definite improvement. Anyway, catch up next week. See you later.”

Week 5 Ramsey Hunt Syndrome. Slow process big 2-3 weeks ahead before neurologist. pic.twitter.com/LLcqQGcuO7

UPDATE – 30th March
“So just a quick update, we’re up to week five now since diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome. I think there’s a definite improvement in my voice. I’m able to speak although if you have to say anything that starts with a P or a B, it’s a struggle.
“If you didn’t know that you’ve got to touch your lips together to be able to say a word that starts with P or B.
“Anyway, that’s just a useless bit of drivel for you. So that side all good, can move everything. That side nothing. I’ll try moving my forehead, you can see the right side doesn’t go up. I’ll try and close my eye. I can’t close it.
“No feeling in my nose and then obviously my smile. It’s just if I go for neutral, the smile, that’s it. So I don’t know how long it’ll be. We’re five weeks now. Normally five weeks to six weeks is the fatigue stage, which I can really acknowledge just shattered all the time.
“And I see a specialist at week eight, neurologist, and then they’ll decide what they’re going to do from there. Whether they try and reconnect the nerve ends or something to a bit of a missing, I don’t know. It’s the only stuff that I’ve read up on.
“There’s five in every 100,000 people get Ramsay Hunt syndrome. And I read that out of that five, very, very rarely does the gravis or the gravis nerve get attacked as well, which affects the speech and the eating. I got the gravis one as well.
“So I’m struggling to eat without liquid forcing the food down. And it’s affecting my voice a little bit. I got an incredible voice which you’ll all hear when I get better.
“But that’s it. That’s where we’re up to. Just got to crack on one day at a time. So thanks for listening and I’ll touch base in a few weeks time.”
