Fulham say they have been left appalled by abusive messages which were sent to Calvin Bassey after the FA Cup win over Man Utd.

The West London outfit slammed the racist and homophobic abuse directed at their player on social media following the final whistle.

The match, which took place at Old Trafford, ended in a 1-1 draw after extra time, with Fulham advancing to the quarter-finals via a 4-3 penalty shootout win.

Bassey scored the opening goal in the first half, a powerful header from a corner, marking his first FA Cup goal and playing a pivotal role in the upset against the cup holders.

In a strongly worded statement released the day after, Fulham condemned the “abhorrent behaviour,” stating it has “no place in football or society.” T

FULHAM STATEMENT:

Fulham Football Club is utterly appalled at the racist and homophobic abuse received and subsequently shared by Calvin Bassey on social media after yesterday’s FA Cup tie against Manchester United.

We strongly condemn this abhorrent behaviour which has no place in football or society. Such actions are entirely unacceptable, and we stand in full support of Calvin Bassey, who will continue to receive our full backing.

We will do everything in our power to work with the relevant authorities in identifying the perpetrators of these vile messages and taking the strongest form of action against them.

Fulham Football Club is committed to maintaining a firm stance against all forms of discrimination and remains dedicated to fostering an environment of respect and inclusion.

Twitter users reacted with Fulham appalled by abusive messages sent to Calvin Bassey after the win over Man Utd…

@halms_jason: Disgusting hope they can get done. Jealous as Bassey was my MOTM. Absolute giant.

@FFCJam: They can’t handle the best cb in the league, we love you @CalvinBassey

@Here4TheFulham: Thank you for taking a stand on this. Hope you also take a stand against Fulham fans being racist on here to fellow supporters

@FulhamTransfer: This is disgusting! I hope these people are found and dealt with accordingly. @FA. FFN stands with Calvin Bassey! #NoRoomForRacism ⚫⚪#FFC #KickItOut

@GoldyFulham55: Appears racist scum are out in force again, this time attacking Calvin Bassey. These sad little key board warriors are cowards. Big mouth pricks who hide like rats but are brave with their fingers. Society continues to fail on a monumental level.

@Glenn_Chamber: Fucking disgusting bastards!!! Hope the people who have sent these are found and dealt with accordingly. No room for this in the world let alone football.

@SegaMakiza: The reality of being a black footballer. I would hazard a guess that 90% of black footballers in top flight football have had some sort of racial abuse in their DM request on Instagram. Between opposition fans angry their teams lost and gamblers angry they’ve lost bets. Most players don’t care to report it because of just how often it happens, it’s almost become normal to them. Unfortunately so difficult to combat because of burner accounts and a majority of the abuse coming from abroad countries. Some players don’t want to report it because they don’t want to be seen to be “victimising themselves”, if abuse is reported after a lose it’s seen as an “excuse” because they’ve lost. Sad to say but I don’t see many pros in players reporting these sort of things.

@mrtripleb: They do realise all their XI from yesterday are foreign bar Maguire? 😅

@MarkHil10062095: Just seen the scummy racist messages our boy Calvin Bassey has received I hope we report it and they get dealt with.. Salty united fans taking there loss well I see… pathetic club

@Debbie32840834: @CalvinBassey the whole of the Fulham following is with you. This is disgusting. Head held high bro. You are the best

@daggercraig82: That’s absolutely horrific just vile disgusting scum definitely with you Calvin

–

@jackellyffc: Absolutely disgusting. Abhorrent behaviour. Mindless idiots are able to send this sort of abuse via instagram and social media companies always fail to take any sort of action. We live in such a grim society, and sadly this happens far too often. @kickitout
