The Kansas City Current named former Major League Soccer manager Chris Armas the club’s new head coach in an announcement Wednesday.

A former United States men’s national team midfielder and MLS champion, Armas most recently coached the Colorado Rapids of MLS. During his two-year tenure, the Rapids made the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs in 2024 and just missed out on the postseason in 2025.

Prior to that, Armas managed the New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC, both of MLS. His head coaching career started when he coached the DII Adelphi University Panthers women’s team at his alma mater from 2011-2014.

“From the talented group of players, the facilities and passionate fan base, this club represents a world class environment,” Armas said in a statement. “Above all, it’s the culture and the people that impressed me most. I’m inspired by the shared vision of the ownership and staff, and I will do everything I can to help make the KC Current the best women’s football club in the world.”

Armas’ hiring comes less than two months after Kansas City announced front-office changes that included former head coach Vlatko Andonovski transitioning full-time to global sporting director, a role he also held while serving as manager for two seasons.

“We are excited to have Chris in Kansas City, and I look forward to working closely with him as we continue to take the club to new heights,” Andonovski said. “Chris brings a wealth of experience that will be invaluable for our organization. His passion for the game is evident, as is his commitment to his players and his winning mindset.”

The Current won the National Women’s Soccer League Shield this year in historic fashion, setting league records with 65 points and 21 wins. But despite the regular season success, they were upset in the first round of the playoffs by eventual champions Gotham FC.

“We are beyond excited to welcome Chris to the Kansas City Current family,” club co-owners Angie and Chris Long said. “He brings an abundance of experience at the highest levels both as a coach and a player and shares in our long-term vision of the Kansas City Current being the best women’s football club in the world.”
