Liverpool go 12 points clear while Ipswich pick up vital win

The Premier League returned this week after the international break, with six games taking place on Wednesday evening.

There were important wins for Ipswich Town and Aston Villa, while Liverpool extended their lead at the summit of the table with eight games to go.

Elsewhere, there was heartache for struggling Southampton, while champions Manchester City ran out comfortable winners and Newcastle backed up their Carabao Cup glory with victory.

Read on to see how the games unfolded across the top flight.

Liverpool 1-0 Everton

Diogo Jota netted a second-half goal to give Liverpool bragging rights in the Merseyside derby and extend their lead at the top of the table to 12 points.

Everton were perhaps a little fortunate to keep all eleven men on the pitch after James Tarkowski’s crunching follow-through on Alexis Mac Allister.

But the Toffees had chances of their own, with Beto having a goal ruled out for offside before hitting the post shortly after.

In the end, it was Jota’s strike – jinking past two defenders before slotting home – that proved to be the difference.

Bournemouth 1-2 Ipswich

Ipswich Town picked up a vital three points as they go in search of Premier League survival. Nathan Broadhead put the Tractor Boys in front at the Vitality Stadium before Liam Delap doubled the visitors’ advantage.

Evanilson pulled one back but Kieran McKenna’s side held on for an important 2-1 win. Meanwhile, the result makes it a miserable few days for the Cherries after they were dumped out of the FA Cup by Manchester City on Sunday.

Brighton 0-3 Aston Villa

Marcus Rashford scored in his first league goal in a Villa shirt as his resurgence in the west Midlands continues.

Simon Adingra thought he had levelled for Brighton five minutes later but the goal was ruled out after a VAR check.

Another of Villa’s marquee January signings, Marco Asensio, added a second 12 minutes before Donyell Malen got his name on the scoresheet in stoppage to seal a 3-0 win.

Manchester City 2-0 Leicester City

Jack Grealish bagged his first Premier League goal of the season as Manchester City ran out comfortable 2-0 winners over struggling Leicester.

The England international scored inside two minutes after being given a rare start by Pep Guardiola, with Omar Marmoush grabbing the other goal shortly before the half-hour mark.

The victory keeps City in the top four, six points behind Nottingham Forest in third.

Newcastle United 2-1 Brentford

Despite jubilant celebrations in the city, there was to be no Carabao Cup hangover for Newcastle as goals from Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali were enough to secure a 2-1 win over Brentford at St James’ Park.

Bryan Mbeumo had levelled from the penalty spot in the second half, but the Magpies saw out the game to move up to fifth in the table.

Southampton 1-1 Crystal Palace

There was late heartache for Saints fans as a goal in second-half stoppage time from Matheus Franca rescued a point for Crystal Palace at St Mary’s.

Paul Onuachu had given the Premier League basement boys the lead after 20 minutes, but Ivan Juric’s side were unable to hold on as Palace extended their unbeaten run to six matches in all competitions.
